Good morning, everyone.

From yesterday’s Sunday Independent. Of any piece on antisemitism I have written, I put the most thought into this one, and I do hope you will do me the honour of reading it in full. The piece focuses on themes of identity, loyalty, betrayal, and with whom one’s fate belongs.

As Irish Jews continue to be alienated in Irish society, I relay one plea from the Irish Jewish community: listen to us.

‘I think often of the quote by Polish communist Isaac Deutscher, who stated after The Holocaust that he had “long since abandoned my anti-Zionism, which was based on a confidence...in European society and civilisation, which that society and civilisation have not justified”.

In refusing to listen and accept the concerns of its Jewish sons and daughters, Irish society has punctured the confidence that many of us had in this great nation and, indeed, has strengthened the case for Zionism.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” is a famous phrase by yet another esteemed son of Ireland. This is a value the Jewish community have lived by since their arrival here in the 1600s. It is not too much to ask for one thing in return: listen.’

I want to thank the Sunday Independent for asking me to write another piece. As the poll results included in my article illustrate, this is not a popular subject to write on in this county. In order for the Jewish community to be listened to, it first must be heard. A platform such as this is most appreciated.

On the 14th of October you uploaded an interview to your website and app with a woman named as Aida Abu Rob distraught about the fact that after 20 years in prison her brother is being deported not released in Ramallah.

Your video fails to give any information about who Murad is and what he did. Your journalist doesn't even give his full name let alone inform the public of this important context. I found out that he was responsible for a suicide bombing in 2006 that murdered four people.

The piece appears to offer an equivalence between the family of a terrorist with the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade who was tried in court and Israeli hostages kidnapped and by Hamas and other terror orgs due to no fault of their own.

You have failed to inform the public of the context, you have failed to offer balance and as a result have likely increased sympathy for a man who was responsible for the murders of four people. How do you think the families of his victims feel at his release?

Why didn't your staff think to ask who the brother was and then they could have provided the necessary context? Why didn't any of your other stuff who worked on that video and then promoted it think to raise any concerns?

This is a failure not just from the journalist on the ground but through the entirety of the team and their management who oversaw the processing and uploading of the video to a prominent place on your website and app.

At the very least you should be making it clear that Murad and other released prisoners have been convicted of some terrible crimes that warranted long sentences in prison. That would have given a more honest view of the situation.

What are you going to do to redress this?

I wrote this in answer to a friend who was at the Manchester vigil yesterday (Friday).
All of you soaked to the skin in the pouring rain were faced with David Lammy. It wasn’t heckling. It was a communal outpouring of grief and rage and that rain was G-d’s tears.
I waited for Lammy to open by changing his prewritten script. To apologise that the govt, those with the power to effect change, hadn’t done enough. To say he heard you, and he understood, and he deserved your reaction.
I listened to his opening words and when it became clear he wasn’t going to do any of that I stopped watching.
What a load of stone hearted, inflexible mediocrities we have at our helm.

I accuse the Metropolitan Police and Sadiq Khan of allowing the hate marches –  filled with genocidal chants and blood libels – to terrorise Jewish people and parrot Hamas propaganda since October 8 2023.
I accuse the women’s charities of hypocrisy for failing to once speak up against the sexual violence perpetuated on October 7 or demanding that the female hostages are returned: in doing so they have set the feminist movement back decades.
I accuse the Arab states and countries including Ireland, Spain and South Africa of insincerity for insisting there was a “genocide” going on in Gaza but refusing to offer a home to any Palestinian refugees.
I accuse the BBC and Sky of parroting Hamas propaganda and never once saying that footage from Gaza was censored by the fascist terrorist organisation.
I could go on. I am so filled with rage. I do not know any of these people. I don’t hate them. But in refusing to acknowledge what Hamas is, they are agents of harm to our society. They need to be called out, over and over again.
