Boris Johnson committed a “clear and unambiguous breach” of the ministerial code by taking up his role as a Daily Mail columnist without first seeking the advice of the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments. Lord Pickles, ACOBA chair, says Johnson was familiar with the rules, because as PM he set them out - and has been criticised for an earlier rule breach - but he still road roughshod over them again. Pickles reiterates that the rules on outside remunerative work by ex ministers and officials are out of date and need more teeth. The time is past, he says, when we can rely on “good chaps” to do the right thing.
