In the case of children, the original sin came during the pandemic- they were cast as ‘disease carriers’, denied education, many times confined with abusers and told that their needs were subordinate. Why so surprised?

My anger about gender ideology is driven by safeguarding. If a child wrongly becomes convinced they’re trans (as is happening repeatedly, in real time) “affirmation” can put them on a path towards medical interventions they may bitterly regret. Compassion means saying: slow down, grow up, and let’s understand why you feel this way first.

I take issue with the ‘decarbonise the planet’ argument - certainly absent a look at the benefits of bit more CO2 in the atmosphere. The greening of deserts and massive crop yields don’t come from nowhere while the corrosive impact of high energy costs are obvious everywhere.

As a Brit who’s been baking in heatwave after heatwave this summer - with swathes of the country going up in smoke - it’s infuriating that the entire world could suffer the consequences of climate change while America remains one of the biggest polluters on the planet.

And it’s particularly infuriating that the Democrats could be doing something about it if they were in power.

But they’re not.

Why?

Because the Democrats have allowed themselves to become obsessed with gender politics, which undermines the rights of biological women and has caused harm to children. Ask any detransitioner.

They’re also flirting with socialism, which has traditionally been about as welcome to American voters as a bacon sandwich at a bar mitzvah.

As a result of the toxicity of this wholesale embrace of woke ideology by the Democrats, you have a US president who doesn’t seem to believe climate change is a serious threat.

And I can’t see much chance of a Democratic president being elected again unless the party moves back towards the centre, away from its ideological fringes, decouples itself from identity politics and starts speaking common sense to ordinary Americans.

Decarbonising the planet is an opportunity for the countries that take the lead to make a lot of money.

The future is not coal and oil. It is clean, green, renewable energy.

That might not come from thousands of windmills, but it’s going to have to come from somewhere.

And America is going to find itself left behind if it doesn’t get with the programme.

It’s really strange that grown adults have been going along with the pronouns nonsense for so long.

Even if there were some legitimate reason for people choosing their own pronouns, which there isn’t, the whole thing is completely unworkable.

They/them pronouns can be baffling and confusing. Yes, singular “they” has existed in English for centuries, but traditionally it was used when someone’s sex was unknown or irrelevant. Using it deliberately for a known individual can create ambiguity between singular and plural.

Theoretically, we could invent specific non-binary pronouns if society collectively agreed to them. But that was never the demand. The demand was that individuals could choose their own pronouns and everyone else was expected to comply, with increasingly absurd examples being proposed.

Then getting someone’s pronouns “wrong” became another opportunity to take offence.

I’m afraid all of it has to go. It’s he/him, she/her, or nothing. Nobody has the right to dictate the words that other people must use to describe them.

And if that offends you, tough luck.

Being offended doesn’t mean you’re right.

Firstly, if the allegations surrounding Jason Arday were false, he could have sued every publication that published them. He wouldn’t have had to prove they were false; the publications would have had to defend what they published. That’s the law. If he had a strong case, there would have been no shortage of lawyers willing to represent him and no lack of well-heeled supporters willing to fund his case. Had he been a falsely maligned innocent, he could have made a fortune.

Secondly, these apology videos are deeply disturbing. This is what the country would look like if we had the sort of “progressive” government Carole Cadwalladr and others appear to want: every time somebody says the “wrong” thing, thinks the “wrong” thing or writes the “wrong” thing, a grovelling apology must follow. Or else…

A suicide is always a tragedy. But if you believe the same people screaming their outrage and grief about Jason Arday would have given two hoots had someone like Gregg Wallace killed himself after the avalanche of damaging publicity he received, despite not being charged with any criminal offence, you’re kidding yourself.

This is increasingly about politics. And some of those most conspicuously displaying their anger and pointing fingers are simultaneously pushing the political argument hardest.

This is a post for any progressive left-wingers out there who haven’t completely entrenched themselves in a belief system they can’t reverse out of.

I used to be part of your tribe, and I still believe many of the things you do.

I want a fairer more peaceful world. Racism is wrong. I want us to protect the planet. I think it’s obscene that some people are unimaginably rich while others are dirt poor. And I recognise that the more unequal societies become, the more dangerous and divided they become.

You see, I agree with all that stuff. It’s not hard to admit it.

But these days Greta Thunberg wears a keffiyeh and even a balaclava sometimes. Dale Vince wears a keffiyeh. Zack Polanski of the Green Party seems more concerned about helping men who believe they are women gain access to women’s spaces than he does about ecological crises.

Identity politics is divisive. Gender ideology is poisonous and harms children and women’s rights.

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to buy into any of that crap to still want a better world.

If there are reasonable progressives reading this and thinking, “It’s true. I hate some of the stuff my tribe is doing,” then you can leave it behind. You don’t have to become a raving right-winger. It’s not a zero sum game. You can just return to the centre ground.

You don’t have to agree with me either. I do have some reactionary views. But I’ve not lost the plot. I am always willing to hear the views of others and reconsider my opinions.

But the time is long overdue to call out beliefs that are simply nuts, sideline them, and get back to what progress was supposed to be about: creating a freer, fairer society for the vast majority of ordinary people. Education, good jobs, a country built on shared values, rights and responsibilities.

Not using identity as a weapon. Not demanding that one group surrender its rights for another. And not dragging vulnerable kids into a vortex of gender confusion that will have consequences for the rest of their lives.

So come on, reasonable people. Ask yourself some questions. Question your own side as fiercely as you question the other.

Let’s stop playing the algorithmic game, stop retreating into our tribes, and get back to some form of sanity.
