When I think of Ann Widdecombe, I think of this little poem she wrote for her cats, which she recited in her documentary with Louis Theroux. Years later, I still find myself saying it at random.
Goodness gracious, what is that?
It’s Mr. Pugwash, my black cat.
Goodness gracious, are there others?
Yes indeed, my cat Carruthers.
I also think of her strength of character. She wasn’t bent by public pressure, nor did she allow criticism to distract her. Her actions matched her words, and she refused to cast herself as a victim.
People who had the privilege of knowing her describe her as kind, funny and principled. She relished debate, believed in democracy, and engaged with people who disagreed with her. Disagreement, to her, was not a reason to dehumanise someone.
There are many things that made Ann Widdecombe remarkable. Those are what deserve to be remembered, not the degrading, dehumanising comments of a man with no moral compass.
Fifteen years ago, as a die-hard Corbynite, Labour voter, lefty and Remainer, I'd probably have scoffed at the death of Ann Widdecombe, if I'm honest. I loved Andy Hamilton's Old Harry's Game on BBC Radio 4, and she was the punchline in what felt like every episode.
Looking back, I'm quite ashamed of that version of myself. It wasn't real morality, it was performative virtue.
The last decade has been quite a journey for me, both spiritually and politically, and I don't think the two are unrelated. Watching people rush to celebrate her death, only to frantically delete their posts when it emerged she had been brutally murdered, made me realise how grateful I am not to be that person anymore.
I'm meeting more and more people who've travelled a similar path and arrived at much the same place.
Whatever your politics, don't let hatred become part of your character. Try to pull people up to your level, rather than allowing yourself to be dragged down to theirs.
RIP Ann. You were quite some human being.
The nature and wildlife we all love: birds, bees, hedgehogs - are being silently poisoned by a group of powerful chemical companies making billions selling toxic pesticides and fertilisers. The UK government can stop this, but they’re failing to act https://t.co/XkiT1e0F1r
This interview and viewpoint needs listening to for understanding and elevating all races. Also thanks @tomowolade for highlighting that statistically in education young Roma students are also an struggling ethnic minority alongside Caribbean Students. https://t.co/aZEWSRJNG6
Yes, Suffolk was lovely. And quiet and peaceful. Once. With lovely friendly people. But, by hook or by crook, I'm getting out after 22 years here.
At one end of my village, there's recently been built a housing development with a couple of hundred houses on. Creating never ending traffic through my village. At the other end of my village, hundreds of acres of farmland have been decimated for a massive park and ride site for Sizewell C workers.
The pretty small market town of Framlingham is now surrounded by new housing estates.
Woodbridge didn't escape either. With a acres of fields in Woods Lane bring turned over for housing. Gone forever are the stunning yellow rape and red poppy fields.
Within a couple of miles of my village, there's a new housing development at Rendlesham and one in Eyke. Causing more traffic everywhere.
All along the A12 from Friday Street to Yoxford, hundreds of acres of farmland have been compulsorily purchased to build a new dual carriageway, roundabouts and roads for easy access for construction traffic to Sizewell C. Despite Sizewell C being some 5 - 10 miles away.
The pretty villages like Theberton have been blighted by hundreds of lorries trundling by on their way to Sizewell C.
And don't forget the other energy projects at Walberswick and Friston too.
Further down the A12 at Martlesham, 2,000 new houses are being built called Brightwell Lakes and opposite there, on farmland, plans have just been submitted for another 1,300 new houses.
There are so many new housing developments in the Trimley villages, it's now joined to Felixstowe.
This isn't progress. It's wanton destruction of England, of Suffolk. The place I once loved.☹️😢😥
One of the loveliest stories ever.
We got a call about a dog in Thailand who was suffering in the heat. He had been kicked out in the streets.
Never did we think it would end like this… (1/6) 🧵
The World Doesn’t Need Another Religion. It Needs the Church Christ Founded.
I have become convinced that the greatest crisis facing civilization is not economic, political, or technological.
It is spiritual.
Every civilization is built upon an answer to one question: What is man?
If man is merely a product of evolution with no objective purpose, then morality becomes opinion, rights become negotiable, and the strong eventually define justice for the weak.
But if every person is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), redeemed by Christ, and destined for eternity, then every human life possesses an inviolable dignity that no government, culture, or majority vote can erase.
This is the vision the Catholic Church has proclaimed for two thousand years.
Christ did not leave humanity with a collection of private interpretations. He founded one visible Church (Matthew 16:18–19), entrusted her with His teaching authority (Luke 10:16), and promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against her. Through Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium, the Church faithfully preserves the truth that sets people and civilizations free (John 8:32).
History bears witness to the fruits of this faith. Catholic monks preserved learning through the collapse of empires. The Church gave birth to many of the world’s first universities, inspired hospitals and countless charitable institutions, defended the dignity of the poor, and taught that every human person possesses worth because each is loved by God.
This does not mean Catholics have always lived up to the Gospel. We have sinned, sometimes grievously. But the failures of Christians do not invalidate the truth of Christ any more than the failures of patients invalidate medicine.
To say that every person should become Catholic is not a claim of superiority. It is a confession that Christ entrusted the fullness of the means of salvation to His Church (CCC 816), and that every soul deserves the fullness of the truth, the Sacraments, and the grace He established for our salvation.
A civilization flourishes when God is worshipped above self, marriage is honored, children are welcomed, the unborn are protected, the poor are served, justice is tempered by mercy, and truth is loved more than power.
These are not merely Catholic ideals.
They are the fruits of the Gospel.
The Church does not seek to conquer nations by force.
She seeks to convert hearts by the truth of Jesus Christ.
Because when hearts are converted, families are renewed.
When families are renewed, cultures are transformed.
And when cultures are transformed, civilizations flourish.
The world does not need less Catholicism.
It needs more saints.
I don't know who needs to hear this:
Even when situations feel completely “dead”, hopeless relationships, broken dreams, financial ruin, health crises, or deep despair,
hold onto faith and call on God.
Jesus waited until Lazarus had been dead four days (beyond human hope), yet He still brought resurrection.
In today’s world, this reminds us:
. Don’t give up too soon.
. God’s timing is often later than we want, but never too late.
. What looks like the end can become a powerful new beginning.
My takeaway for today:
In your darkest “tomb” moments, keep believing, new life can still walk out!
OMG! I was reading about Ruth, and her story reminds us that God often does His best work after loss. Ruth didn’t begin in a season of blessing. She lost her husband and the future she expected. She stood in uncertainty, wondering what came next. Everything had changed. Many of us know that feeling maybe from losing a relationship, friendship, dream, season of life, or the person we thought we’d always be. Loss can make you feel your best days are behind you. But Ruth’s story proves otherwise. Instead of giving up, she moved forward one step, one day, and one act of faith at a time. While she tried to survive, God was positioning her for a future she never imagined. He can turn a chapter of grief into a testimony of restoration. Don’t miss what God is doing while staring at what you lost. One chapter ending doesn’t mean your story is over. God is still writing, restoring, and opening doors. Sometimes the greatest blessings come after the greatest disappointments. “The Lord bless you, my daughter,” he replied. Ruth 3:10 🤍
I'm furious about this.
I'm a parent and one of my children who falls in this age category has faced very serious in person bullying at school that extended out into social media. It was all encompassing and seriously harmful.
So I understand the potential for seriously negative impact from social media on young people.
But the single most important thing that got them through it was their friendship online with kids in the US. 1 in particular who became a very close friend who was part of a larger group.
They game together but spend the time chatting and working on plans for the future. It's a true friendship. Talking about business ideas, culture, etc, for hours everyday.
Without that, they would have had absolutely no outlet and been doomed to only exist in a reality in which they have been completely outcast.
As a parent, I monitor social media use using already available tools. I create accounts myself and know who is being interacted with.
I set up curfews for certain apps on all devices but make sure I allow for the positive interactions and friendships to happen.
As some are in the US, that means access at late hours but I'm entirely capable of managing this and I know the trade offs involved and then manage through those as well.
I talk with my children directly about the risks, what to do, what not to do and why.
If the government moves forward with these blanket curfews, that will cut my child off from their best friend for good which will very seriously impact their mental health.
I will absolutely not accept the government harming my child in this manner.
PRAYER TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

We entrust ourselves completely to Your Most Sacred Heart, now and forever.
Amen. 🙏

“The saints weren’t made to fit in. They were made to stand out.”
— Jim Caviezel
This doesn't mean saints tried to be different just for the sake of being different. It means they chose to follow Christ, even when it was unpopular, uncomfortable, or misunderstood. The world often tells us to go with the crowd, stay quiet about our beliefs, and avoid anything that might make us stand out. But Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23).
The saints were ordinary people who said "yes" to God in extraordinary ways. St. Francis gave up wealth. St. Joan of Arc followed God's call despite fear. St. Maximilian Kolbe laid down his life for another person. They didn't blend into the culture around them. They allowed Christ to transform them.
Holiness has never been about fitting in. It's about loving God enough to live differently. Sometimes faithfulness will cost you approval, comfort, or understanding. But the goal was never to be accepted by everyone. The goal is to become the person God created you to be.
If following Jesus made you stand out from the people around you, would you see it as something to avoid... or something worth embracing?
Someone you know may need the courage to stop hiding their faith and start living it boldly.

When I was Muslim, I thought the Quran and the Bible told the same Adam story.
Then I actually read them side by side.
In the Quran, Adam sins, says sorry, and Allah just forgives him. Clean. Done. Surah 2:37.
No blood, covering, nor cost.
But in the Bible, God is very clear: Sin, and you will CERTAINLY die. There’s a real punishment for going against God.
Yet the moment Adam sins, he doesn’t die - something else does.
God kills an animal to cover their shame and clothes them.
Genesis 3:21. The first death in history is God covering a sinner He could’ve destroyed.
That’s the whole story right there.
One book says sin is a debt you apologize for.
The other says sin is a death someone has to absorb.
And bro, if sin is just a “my bad” to God — then the cross is a cruel overreaction.
But if sin actually kills — then the cross isn’t overkill.
It’s the only thing that was ever going to work.
I left Islam the day I realized forgiveness without blood is just God pretending He didn’t see it.
This is our faith as Catholics, and we are proud to proclaim it.
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him, all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father (and the Son),
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. 🔥
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
There was a homeless man who 'camped' in the covered garage where my office was located. You'd see him huddle down for the night, along with his little dog, a small scruffy little terrier mix. When I walked thru the garage on my way to lunch, I would often check to see where he was and then bring him a burger and drink. He always tore the sandwich in half, ate one half and gave the other to his dog. I started bringing him a bag of dry dog food every month and he took great pains to keep it dry. His little dog rode in the child's seat in the grocery cart wherever he went.
One especially cold winter morning, I noticed his dog was missing and he seemed utterly forlorn. I bought him some coffee and he explained how the city rounded up the homeless and took them to the shelter because it was bitterly cold and they took his dog away from him. They took her to the local shelter (no license, no tags, no rabies vaccination). I was appalled.
I took the morning off, picked him up from the garage & drove him to the shelter where we asked to look for his 'lost' dog. When we found her, she put up such a racket of pure joy upon seeing him: yipping, yelping, wiggling uncontrollably. Paws squeezed between chain link trying to touch her master and his fingers stroking her little face.
I paid for her license, basic shots and retrieval fee and he rode back in silence hugging her so tight, I thought he would break her. When we got out, I told him to keep her safe. He hugged me, made Sasha give me a smooch of thanks, and hurried off to where he'd hidden his cart.
I understand the need to keep these souls safe but taking his one undeniable friend -- while legally founded -- was gut wrenchingly wrong on so many other levels.
Any act of kindness can change lives….no matter how great or small.
