After a decade working in XR at Big Tech, I've missed talking openly about the industry 🥲
Trying my first podcast convo w/ Siciliana Trevino. We're sharing some honest reflections on where we feel XR is today.
First podcast + learning! Feedback welcome. https://t.co/Ko1D0TobD5
This new ‘Social VR’ ad seemed to be missing something 🤔…perhaps an intentional decision? Check out the clip from the most recent Podcast episode “The Existential Crisis of a Tech Enthusiast”https://t.co/9DJZZZ933A
I see it. I like it. I build it. 👓

“You can’t pack up your virtual world and move it when the platform shuts down. You can’t take your avatar, your community, or the memories you made there.” -S
That loss is real. Let’s have a real conversation about it:
New episode! (YT or Spotify 🎧) https://t.co/NlrUMb7N8t
We talk about platform risk in business terms. Rarely in human terms.
For world/community builders, embodiment means platform loss isn’t abstract. It’s *visceral* grief.
We’ve been through this cycle enough times now. What does actually supporting builders thru it look like?

@SecretErik@KiliaXeno You do realize they replace Bond every 2 business days in the franchise with a ***completely different person**. There's nothing consistent about the James Bond character that carries over bc everyone he loves gets killed off. 'White' is not his defining trait, 'British' is.
In this clip, @NeildaLikeZelda shares how attending/creating Builder communities expanded her tech career and amplify opportunities for ppl + tech innovation. I can relate, which begs the question, how more effective are they to submitting resumes alone? https://t.co/pTFZrP7deI
Ah, made some fixes to video, New link! New podcast episode w/ @NeildaLikeZelda on the role dev/building communities have scaling new tech, and her experience bt Creating XR and AI communities and why building tech ecosystems is critical to innovation.
https://t.co/wKp9VwLVsB
XR dev communities were gated by hardware/costs (high spec gaming pcs/laptops, new HMDs to buy every year, frequent IDE integration hiccups)
While AI communities are open, and streamlined by default.
This might explain why XR struggled to scale same (thx w/@NeildaLikeZelda)
One thing I found interesting after becoming a VR dev and seeing behind the curtain a bit:
Lots of the studios were essentially set up to only survive if they were getting supplemental grants/money from Meta and other VR platforms.
These grants are pretty common and we have even taken one too at Fluid. However the danger is that many of them have you doing work that pays in the short term but doesn’t really have a shot at making you sustainable revenue in the long term (e.g. making horizon worlds content)
When that temporary money dries up, you find yourself with expenses that are higher than your income and your cash starts disappearing really fast.
Often these studios find it easier to find the next grant/contract than building a durable income stream based on real consumer demand. Usually the next short term project is even less likely to fix the problem than the last. This death-spiral cycle repeats a few times and then you find yourself exhausted and back exactly where you started.
It used to be possible to raise outside money to build that durable thing and break the cycle, but VC is pretty thin in VR right now so the only way out is to cut your burn and do whatever it takes to get “default alive”.
Studios that I admire like @Rengle820 , @WalkaboutMG, @YeepsVR , @weareFitXR have figured this out and focused on finding real PMF in profitable niches and kept their expenses low rather than staffing up a lot and chasing less concrete goals.
Between resurfaced battle of Team “VR is dead” and Team “long live VR”…
it feels like we’re missing a more honest conversation. 😅
Siciliana and I explore what’s actually being communicated beneath on both sides. 🥲

@2Pish181332 However, we're using it loosely here meaning, you don't have to look like you're real physical self, you have a lot of creative freedom with your identity in VR chat where there were very limited choices, and more restrictions with others.
We filmed a #SocialVR episode before the Rec Room news dropped today…
One thing we kept coming back to: Why did Horizon Worlds + Rec Room struggle to scale like VRChat?
And could avatars (and their constraints) play a big role in this outcome?
@2Pish181332 technically, these are avatars that can be embodied without the human skeletal rig/frame. So in VR Chat, you have the freedom to embody and express your virtual identity as non-human characters. e.g. you can show up as a basketball, giraffe, dragon, or a random shape.
@VRCatalans Yes!! Would genuinely love your thoughts.
Trying to create space for more thoughtful conversations around XR as it feels like everything right now is either “XR is dead” or “VR will change everything,” and there’s a lot in between we’re not talking about. 😅
