Queued 30 minutes to watch the penguin feeding at the aquarium today.

Less interesting than watching someone feed ducks at a pond.

No disrespect to the penguins, they did their job.

You can do essentially the same thing with ducks at a pond and nobody makes you queue.

I get why so many founders disappear to places like Thailand to build.

The different environment and fewer distractions, all for more thinking, more focus & ultimately more shipping.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been in Thailand on a family holiday while at the same time, completing client work and building Folian, and the progress has been enormous.

The private beta has been brutal in the best possible way. Bugs I never knew existed & UX issues I was completely blind to have resulted in hundreds of improvements that only real users could uncover.

Public beta is taking a little longer than I hoped because I’m fixing the product properly instead of rushing it out the door.

Every day it gets better. I’ll be building a little longer while I’m Thailand before completely shutting off to have some real relaxation & downtime.

I genuinely thought Folian was only days away from public beta.

Then private beta happened & served up a serious smack down.

Within hours, testers found bugs I’d never seen. Some edge cases, UI issues & workflow enhancements. Things that only appear once real writers start using real projects.

It was a good reminder that shipping software isn’t about getting it working for yourself.

It’s about making it reliable for everyone else.

So yes, public beta might slip a little.

I’m not interested in launching something that’s “good enough”. I’m building a writing operating system people will trust with years of their work.

When Folian launches, I want it to go toe to toe with anything else on the market.

If that means another week or two of polishing, that’s a trade I’ll make every time.

If you’re waiting for public beta, thank you for your patience.

@itsvlady I’m certainly glad for it. One thing I’ve certainly learned is that ensure your private beta are the type to give you honest feedback and not to be ones that put up with bugs.

Folian is going to be much stronger for it.

One of the last pieces before Folian goes into public beta is a configuration layer.

The app is ready, but I don’t want to ship something that becomes outdated every time an AI model changes or a new provider appears.

Instead, Folian will fetch a signed configuration that lets me:

• Add and retire AI models without shipping a new app.
• Update provider settings and capabilities.
• Roll out improvements safely.
• Future-proof the desktop application as the AI landscape evolves.

It seems small though a bit complicated, but it’s one of the most important pieces of infrastructure.

With ai releases happening almost weekly, the standard for software being built now needs to be that it doesn’t become obsolete because the greater tech ecosystem is growing quickly. The product should be built to evolve.

Building this now means the version people download during public beta can continue to improve long after it’s installed.

Sometimes the most valuable work before launch is the part users will never notice.
