This guy claimed he wants a large group of “high-quality sons” who will eventually inherit and take over his business. He reportedly told the court that he considered boys superior to girls. The same investigation found other wealthy Chinese clients who are also building unusually large families through surrogacy.

The main point here is that the commercial surrogacy industry has become so sophisticated that wealthy people can use it like a reproductive supply chain, almost like hobbyists. In any other context, this scale of buying reproductive labour and outsourcing the biological costs of producing children would raise extremely serious questions about exploitation, commodification, and trafficking, as well as the power that extreme wealth gives people over reproduction. We shouldn’t skip past the questions about sex selection and eugenic thinking here either.

Of course, I expect people to make this exclusively about birthright citizenship but whatever this is is far more bizarre.
