⚠️ DRY ON THE WETTEST DAY OF THE YEAR ⚠️
It’s rained more times on Nov. 19 in Seattle than on any other day of the year. But not so this time around!
Enjoy a rare rain-free Nov. 19 as we log our 12th dry day in a row.
So many of you are akin to my neighbors’ cat. I don’t really know you, but feel as if we have all been in conversation for years. And I’ll miss you when this glorious, problematic mess of a space is gone.
My next door neighbor has a cat. I have met neither my neighbors nor their cat. But the cat and I see each other everyday, usually several times a day, through the window. That cat and I don’t know each other, but we have a relationship.
And most importantly, in those moments that felt momentous, you were not alone. You were in conversation, or maybe just in the corner, listening to the conversation. But you were part of it, whatever it was.
You got to see people’s interesting little hobbies (crows, knitting about the weather, Keanu…) and learn which seasons to unfollow people because they got weird about sports.
We could stitch together our own newspaper, complete with a witty, mile-a-minute entertainment section, and an op-Ed page that went on and on, and had Roxane Gay!
Just last week, in the waning days of twitter, I found out the author of a book I love, now lives locally. For me this summarizes the glorious mess of this place : the collision of hyper-local and global.
People say Twitter-as-news has made us stupider, but deducing what actually happened from the jokes is a SKILL. You try and make sense of the Bay of Pigs Invasion from two hundred accounts tweeting, 'It's me, I'm the pigs.'
How to say “let me give you my opinion” in different languages:
5. Let me put a penny in the bag (Dutch)
4. Here’s my two cents (US English)
3. Let me interrupt with my three pennies (Polish)
2. These are my five kopecks (Russian)
1. I would like to add my mustard (German)
My new cookbook SMITTEN KITCHEN KEEPERS is out this week and I cannot thank you enough for sharing my enthusiasm over this book; you're my favorite part of this. What makes a recipe a keeper? How do you make the swirly green cover dish asap? It's all here: https://t.co/EI0reGhAsL

oh my god we're living out the 80s kids movie trope of "an evil rich guy bought the community center where we hang out and is gonna destroy it"
FUCK we'd all better learn to break dance really fast
It is as if Twitter is helping me get bored with Twitter, and thus able to leave it, by becoming mostly the one billionaire news network, w/ the occasional tweet about goats or romance novels sneaking through.
