In Deuteronomy 28, God promises Israel blessings for obedience, including prosperity in "the land he is giving you" (v. 8), but warns of severe consequences for disobedience: "You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess" (v. 63). This covenant, first given to Abraham in Genesis 12:7—"To your offspring I will give this land"—is conditional on fidelity to God. Similarly, Leviticus 26:3-6 assures peace and productivity in the land for those who follow God's decrees, yet verse 33 threatens exile and desolation-"Your land will be laid waste" —for those who rebel. Joshua reinforces this in his farewell address: "If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God... you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you" (Joshua 23:16). The historical exile of the northern kingdom, recorded in 2 Kings 17:23-"So the people of Israel were taken from their homeland into exile in Assyria"-demonstrates this principle in action when Israel turned from God.

Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of this covenant. His coming as the Messiah marks a pivotal moment where obedience to God includes recognizing Him as the promised Savior. The Jewish rejection of Jesus, however, can be seen as a continuation of the disobedience warned against in these passages. By not accepting Christ, they have, in effect, violated the covenant, aligning with the conditions for losing the land. The destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, which led to centuries of diaspora, echoes the curses of Deuteronomy 28:63 and Leviticus 26:33, suggesting a divine consequence for this rejection.

While the Jewish people have returned to the land at times-most notably with the establishment of modern Israel in 1948—their long periods of exile and lack of sustained sovereignty until recently support this view. The ancient promise to Abraham was never revoked, but its realization depends on aligning with God's will, which I believe now includes faith in Christ. Without this, the pattern of loss and displacement persists, as the Scriptures foretold.

This interpretation hinges on the idea that the Messiah's arrival redefined the covenant's terms. The warnings in Deuteronomy, Leviticus, and Joshua are not merely historical; they point to an enduring truth: turning from God's revelation-whether through idolatry in the past or rejecting the Messiah today— jeopardizes the blessing of the land. Thus, I see the Jewish people's historical struggle with land possession as a direct outcome of not embracing Jesus as the Messiah, fulfilling the biblical pattern of exile for covenant unfaithfulness.
