@mikevonmassow@JacobNederend “Quebec has legalized Uber. I can’t imagine them doing the same thing about increased dairy imports…It is worth noting that taxi drivers are not as well organized, are concentrated in urban ridings and are often immigrants and people of colour.” …Interesting insight
@mikevonmassow@JacobNederend I’m not sure what policy goal is being achieved by limiting supply and artificially raising the price (most of the time) of a food staple. Unlike taxis, there really isn’t a substitute for milk or eggs. If Uber price is high I can look at a bus option. I do this regularly.
@ryankatzrosene "Our policies can, and will, have an impact on our emissions, if only at the margins."...fair comment. Fortunately clean tech now has a cost advantage over fossil fuel alternative. But it's probably fair to say policy provided a boost to the clean tech in early stages.
More or less, the president replaced the inflation reduction act with a 50% carbon tax on fossil fuels plus a 30% tax on nitrous oxide emissions from nitrogen based fertilizers - except the treasury doesn’t benefit, rather Big Oil.
@agronomistag If it follows a typical cost curve for new technology, it will rapidly become a less expensive alternative to animal based milk products. It’s available now and sold as a premium product. Targeted at consumers motivated by animal welfare and to some degree environment.
@agronomistag Here is an article from 2025 explaining the technology and challenges. Some forecasters believe the cost of production will follow other technologies creating a disruption in dairy sector initially. https://t.co/CdAj1ncPjc
@Lyonseed@BlueJays Sometimes managers face limited choices and you pick the least bad option. This goes for business as well as baseball. Injuries caught up to him yesterday after a week of outperforming the odds. Under the circumstances leaving him in was defensible. Jays need some pitchers back
@KeithWells6@Kotyjo I see my Maple MAGA friends are still drinking the Kool-Aid. If there is one reason Canada has zero growth for two quarters it’s the policies of the president. A second reason is our population declined, something you guys have been asking for.
@MikeJRaine@stuartsmyth66 You seem to have constructed a belief system based on a faulty foundation. SW Ontario land prices are higher than anywhere I operate in the eastern US. Labour rates are similar with Canadian farms benefiting from lower health care benefit costs.
@MikeJRaine@stuartsmyth66 US farms like Canadian farms face labour shortages. US farms employ workers with irregular status, not because they are illegal and they are less costly, but because they are available.
@Rory_Johnston If the the war ends, he may be correct once strategic supplies and supply chain is recharged. The war has created an equivalent of a 50% carbon tax on oil incentivizing the transition to alternative technologies. Existing supply will be chasing fewer customers.
@andrew_leach@TheHerleBurly Good to hear your perspective on future demand. I remain skeptical as I watch the explosion in demand for ZEVs and low cost generation technology. The recent conflict highlights that getting off FFs also a national security consideration. A topic for next time.
@MikeJRaine@stuartsmyth66 FWIW, government surveys show similar nominal rates for farm labour in both countries. With exchange, Canadian cost is less. This rings true with me. These surveys would include what you label as illegal labour.
@MikeJRaine@stuartsmyth66 What do you think farm labour costs in the US? Canadian vegetable business requires a lot of labour. Why are they successful exporting to the US?
@MikeJRaine@stuartsmyth66 I’ve thought a lot about this question and have some ideas. One question: in light of all the advantages you claim on the US side, how do you explain Canadian beef, pork, grain, oilseeds, vegetables, etc being competitive in US/international markets?
@TheresaLubowitz Your hot take seems a bit over the top…maybe he’s trying to get infrastructure built allowing us to to diversify our trade in province run by a crazy person.
