It is impossible for the US to mine & refine rare earths or rare metals (such as Lithium) without fundamental economic & environmental changes. We have no choice - though that doesn't mean we'll do it
Environment first - we need to overcome the hypocrisy of the Left with EVs.

@RifterHpd29062@FischerKing64 Very unpopular opinion, but I struggle to click with Gould playing Bach. I recognize how masterful it is, but Bach on the piano just doesn’t do it for me. Harpsichord, yes; organ, absolutely. But it just feels flat and plink-y to me on the piano.
@SaysSimulation Ernest Scheyder’s “The War Below” did a pretty good job wrestling with this hypocrisy- i.e., environmentalists kneecapping domestic production of the materials needed for basically all renewable energy technologies in the name of conservation.
@NecktieSalvage Flew through there last week to visit Saugatuck and Holland. Really was a nice airport. Maybe two people in front of me in security, if that.
@fincoherent1@JeremiahDJohns I think what you’re sensing is that it’s a popular Gen X name. People having children now associate it with their parents’ generation - same for Rick, Jeff, Susan, etc. Probably why it feels like it’s not going anywhere, but on a relatively down trend.
@wanyeburkett Taking this a step further, the issue isn’t even whether they’re correct about their dog being friendly. It’s that “friendliness” isn’t even really the correct trait by which to evaluate the dog.
@realStevenWalk@wanyeburkett I’m sorry she couldn’t go to Chicago, but she went to a flagship state research university! And it sounds like it in fact served as a terrific launchpad for her career path. It’s not like without the student loans she had to give it all up and go work in the mines.
@insipidwanker@ryjlocal@kingpilled And so on and so on until centuries later, punk musicians wrote short and abraisve songs to push back against complex and ornate prog rock. The push and pull that shapes western music to this day goes back a long time.
@insipidwanker@ryjlocal@kingpilled Coincidentally, learning these distinctions is a great first step toward making it all click. Seeing that it’s all one big push and pull against each other - ie, baroque was technical and complex, so along come romantics writing more melodic and lyrical works
@matthewqueen84 Alternatively, the issue could be that they *arent* as monolithic as you would think. Intelligence agencies and the Air Force have a long history of power struggle over experimental/stealth aircraft development and testing programs.
@StealthQE4 It’s silly to say that you don’t own something just because it isn’t free. It costs money to own a house just like it costs money to rent one. But you’re right that changing market conditions can tip the scales as to which one makes more sense at any given time.
@CraigMurphy8881@FischerKing64 Hadn’t heard of this guy before, but as an attorney who enjoys Edith Wharton, etc., I’ll definitely be checking him out. Appreciate the recommendation!
@CoffeewClassics A quarter century is a super interesting time frame for the list. There are works in the list that I believe are pretty firmly solidified in the canon of contemporary lit - Tartt, Franzen, Roth, etc. So it’s intersting to try and fit works from the last few years in among them.
@Ins_Brkr Thanks to basically every single commercial property policyholder filing a COVID BI claim, there’s now an entire Library of Alexandria worth of case law on the physical loss or damage requirement for time element losses
@matthewqueen84 Until you show me a captive or parametric solution that can accomplish the two aims closest to my heart - enriching roofers and public adjusters, and putting premiums on a rocket ship to the moon - color me skeptical.
