On This Day in Holocaust History — August 31
1939 — The final Kindertransports (children’s transports). As Europe moved toward war, Jewish children continued to escape Nazi Germany on the Kindertransport. One of the final groups traveled on this day through the Netherlands and crossed the North Sea to Harwich, England. There would be one final transport with sixty children the next day, and then Germany’s invasion of Poland put a stop to it.
Altogether, the rescue operation brought approximately 10,000 predominantly Jewish children to Britain. Most traveled without their parents, and many never saw them again.
1941 — The “Great Provocation” begins in Vilna. German authorities and Lithuanian collaborators staged what became known as the “Great Provocation.” Shots were fired from a Jewish apartment toward German soldiers, creating a fabricated pretext for mass arrests and for clearing the district selected for the Vilna Ghetto.
From August 31 through the first days of September, thousands of Jewish men, women, and children were seized, imprisoned and taken to the Ponary forest, where German forces and Lithuanian auxiliaries shot them beside prepared pits. Approximately 3,700 victims were murdered although other accounts place the number higher.
This was not retaliation for a genuine partisan ambush. It was a planned operation disguised as a reprisal. Two ghettos were established in Vilna several days later, on September 6. Ponary subsequently became the principal killing site for Vilna’s Jews; tens of thousands of Jews and thousands of other victims were murdered there.
1941 — A roundup begins in Minsk. German Order Police, Security Police and other Nazi units rounded up approximately 700 Jews in Minsk, including 64 women, and imprisoned them. The following day, 914 Jews—including those seized on August 31—were taken to Zelyonyi Lug outside the city and shot.
The German report recorded the operation in routine administrative language, illustrating how mass murder was organized, counted and documented as ordinary police work.
August 30–31, 1941 — Romania assumes control of Transnistria. Under an agreement with Nazi Germany, Romania assumed administrative control over Transnistria, the occupied territory between the Dniester and Southern Bug rivers. The region soon became a vast landscape of ghettos, camps, forced marches, starvation and mass execution.
The principal deportations began in the following weeks, especially during September and October. Romanian authorities deported as many as 200,000 Jews—primarily from Bessarabia and northern Bukovina—to Transnistria. German and Romanian forces ultimately murdered or caused the deaths of approximately 150,000 to 250,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews there.
1942 — Children from France arrive at Auschwitz. Convoy 25, which had departed Drancy on August 28 carrying approximately 1,000 Jews, arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Among the deportees were 280 children, many previously separated from their parents and transferred from the Pithiviers camp. Most of the people aboard were murdered after arrival.
On the same day, Convoy 26 departed Drancy for Auschwitz with another approximately 1,000 Jews, including more than 200 children arrested during the Vel d’Hiv roundup and subsequent arrests in France. It arrived on September 2; nearly all the deportees were murdered.
1942 — German and Ukrainian police carried out coordinated roundups in the Tarnopol district of occupied Poland, now western Ukraine.
In Tarnopol, thousands of Jews—principally children, elderly people and those classified as unable to work—were selected for deportation to Bełżec. The victims were held without food or water before approximately 5,000 were transported to the killing center two days later. Smaller deportations also began in communities including Zbaraż and Skałat.
These actions formed part of Operation Reinhard, the German campaign to murder the Jews of occupied Poland.

Twenty-nine years ago today, Princess Diana died in Paris, in a car trying to outrun paparazzi chasing her and Dodi al-Fayed, son of the flamboyant Egyptian owner of Harrods.
Two years later, Tina Brown sent me to run down the many murder theories for the launch issue of TALK magazine. @trishaposner and I went to Paris, London, and Washington — interviewed the paparazzi who chased the car, French police, the pathology team, sources inside the NSA and the British Home Office. I sat for hours with Mohamed al-Fayed, who was pouring a fortune into proving his son and Diana had been murdered.
I did not find a murder plot but instead a cascade of failures and cover-ups: medics and an ambulance crew whose mistakes may have cost Diana a survivable crash; witnesses who slipped away because police never secured the scene; a driver's blood sample handled so badly it may have been contaminated; French intelligence agents who met with Diana's driver just three hours before the crash; a Home Secretary's office ordering pathologists to scrub a pregnancy question from the autopsy (it turned out she was not pregnant); and — the one that caused the biggest stir — NSA surveillance of the Brazilian embassy that had picked up Diana's own conversations with the ambassador's wife.
Tina Brown hoped I could deliver a murder conspiracy. But the real story of official incompetence and cover-up is what fed the conspiracy theories that outlived Diana.

BREAKING UPDATE: Fashion designer John Galliano has withdrawn from the Met Fashion exhibit. At the start of this month, I said it was "sick" that Vogue's editor and some NY "Jewish community leaders" were trying to whitewash Galliano's "I love Hitler" and "f**king gassed and dead" rant (video in the post below).
Better late than never that those who tried to rehabilitate him realized it was bridge too far to bring him into a celebrated New York fashion venue.
I still remember how chilling the interviews were that we had with the paparazzi. They were ice cold. Not for a single second did they accept any responsibility for their role in chasing her car at high speed late at night through the streets of Paris.
“All she had to do was let us take the picture at the Ritz,” one said, as if they might be able to shift the blame to the deceased Princess because she wanted her privacy instead of becoming a pawn in the tabloid photo wars.
Never an iota of remorse from any of them.

She also compared Israeli actions to Nazi crimes, called a London hospital serving a large Jewish community a “Jewish supremacy cesspit,” and was later suspended for 15 months by a medical tribunal.
This is NOT “political speech.” It is a patient-safety issue.
On This Day in Holocaust History — August 30
1939 — A delayed film production saves two lives. Polish-Jewish film stars Leon Liebgold and Lili Liliana are in New York as the planned date of their return to Poland approaches. The married actors—famous for playing the young lovers in the 1937 Yiddish classic The Dybbuk—had traveled to America in February 1939. Liebgold was working on the Yiddish film Tevye, and both appeared in Kol Nidre. They were scheduled to sail for Poland on September 1, but production delays caused them to miss the voyage.
On September 1, Germany invades Poland. The couple remains in the United States and survives. Liebgold later serves in the U.S. Army in Europe; most members of their families who remained in Poland are murdered during the Holocaust.
The story is a reminder that survival sometimes depended on an ordinary delay, a missed train or ship, or a decision whose importance could not have been understood at the time.
1942 — The Jewish community of Rabka is destroyed. German authorities expel nearly all the Jews remaining in Rabka and deport them to the Bełżec killing center. Approximately 200 Jews considered capable of forced labor are temporarily spared and retained in a local labor camp.
Rabka was also the location of a Security Police and SD training school based at the Villa Tereska. Jewish prisoners were forced to maintain and expand the facility. German instructors used local Jews as victims in demonstrations of shooting techniques, while hundreds of Jewish men, women and children were murdered on or near the school grounds.
The August 30 action completes the destruction of the civilian Jewish community. Those deported to Bełżec are murdered in its gas chambers.
1942 — Approximately 1,500 Jews are shot at Nowy Targ
On the same day, German forces liquidate the nearby Nowy Targ ghetto, where approximately 2,500 Jews from the town and surrounding communities have been concentrated.
The prisoners are assembled at a sports stadium and divided into three groups:
* Approximately 1,500 people—including Jewish community leaders, professionals, elderly people and the sick—are taken to the Jewish cemetery and shot.
* About 100 younger prisoners are selected for forced labor at a local sawmill.
* The remaining Jews are forced into railway cars and deported to the Bełżec killing center.
The simultaneous operations at Rabka and Nowy Targ were part of the broader destruction of Jewish communities across the Kraków District during Operation Reinhard.
1942 — Bishop Pierre-Marie Théas publicly condemns the persecution.
A pastoral letter written by Pierre-Marie Théas, the Catholic bishop of Montauban, is read in churches and chapels throughout his diocese. The letter responds to the brutal roundups conducted by Vichy authorities, including the August 26 arrest of approximately 6,500 foreign and stateless Jews in unoccupied southern France.
Théas declares that all people—“Aryan or non-Aryan”—are brothers because they were created by the same God and that every person, regardless of race or religion, has the right to be respected by individuals and governments. Copies of the letter are distributed to approximately forty parishes, preventing authorities from blocking it by intercepting the original. The French Resistance later transmits the message to London, and the BBC broadcasts it to France.
Théas’s protest follows a similar public denunciation by Archbishop Jules-Géraud Saliège of Toulouse. Only a minority of French bishops speak so explicitly, but their protests help change some public attitudes and encourage Catholic institutions and families to hide Jewish children. Théas later assists rescue efforts and is recognized as Righteous Among the Nations.
August 1943 — Treblinka’s extermination operations end
The extermination operations at Treblinka ended in by the end of August 1943. The final transports, carrying Jews from the liquidated Białystok Ghetto, had arrived between August 18 and 23.
The SS then forces the remaining prisoners to dismantle buildings, burn bodies, crush bones, plow the grounds and plant crops to conceal the evidence. The final cleanup prisoners are murdered, and the liquidation of Treblinka II is completed on November 17, 1943.
Between approximately 870,000 and 925,000 people—nearly all Jews—were murdered at Treblinka. By the number of victims, it was the second-deadliest Nazi killing center after Auschwitz-Birkenau.
August 29–30, 1944 — The final deportations from the Łódź Ghetto
The final large transport of Jews leaves the Łódź—or Litzmannstadt—Ghetto for Auschwitz-Birkenau. Sources differ on whether the train departed on August 29 or August 30.
During the final liquidation, approximately 67,000 Jews are deported from Łódź to Auschwitz. Around 45,000 are murdered in the gas chambers. Only slightly more than 3,000 are registered as Auschwitz prisoners; approximately 19,000 others are transferred to additional concentration and forced-labor camps.
A small group remains behind to sort property and dismantle the ghetto. Some prepare bunkers and hiding places because they expect the Germans to murder them once their work is finished.
Łódź had been sealed since 1940. Its destruction marked the end of the last major ghetto in occupied Poland.
Where is the outrage?
These girls were kidnapped from their schools and villages, forced into “marriage,” gang-raped, and strapped with bombs by Boko Haram — radical Islamists who treated them as spoils of war, not human beings.
Too many people only find their activist voice when Jews or Israel can be blamed. Speak up for these girls.

Since I try to call balls and strikes instead of echoing only one side, I notice when a cable host breaks the party line. Hard to find a CNN anchor who gives Trump credit for anything. Just as hard to find a Fox host who criticizes him.
That’s why Rachel Campos-Duffy’s comments this morning stood out. Married to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, she said she might have been “a little too naive,” having assumed the point of removing Maduro was ending “a communist dictator” and liberating Venezuelans. Instead the U.S. cut an oil deal with Delcy Rodríguez — “part of the old regime” — with no talk of elections. “In Venezuela the reviews on this are very mixed, mostly negative,” she admitted.
“The will of the people is still not in place… the Venezuelan people very much want an election.”
Until that happens, Campos-Duffy said, there will be "a lot of questions about motivations here and whether the interests of the Venezuelan people are actually at hand." As for what would happen if elections were held today? “María Corina Machado would be in charge.”
Viewers are better off when they hear more than one note from the same network. Both CNN and Fox do too little of that.
At first many people will might think this cannot be accurate. It is.
Under Iranian law, executing a virgin is prohibited. Human rights groups (Justice for Iran, Amnesty International), former political prisoners, and even a memoir by Ayatollah Montazeri (Khomeini's one-time designated successor) describe prison guards conducting "temporary marriages" —rape — to virgin female political prisoners the night before execution. The rapes are because of their belief that a woman who dies a virgin goes straight to paradise, so the rape is meant to prevent that.

Afghan women don’t get the photo op. They get the burqa, the beating, the forced marriage, and the hole in the ground.
“My body, my choice” is a slogan here for female politicians. Under the Taliban it is a death sentence. Those posing in these photos lecture the rest of us about women’s rights. They have almost nothing to say about the barbaric plight of women trapped in fundamentalist Islamic regimes.

George Orwell's Ministry of Truth would be staffed with truth-denying bureaucrats like Australian novelist, Richard Flanagan. He's the only author ever to win both the Booker and the Baillie Gifford prizes. He read an essay on Israel, Zionism and antisemitism at a festival and said, “Other than the murderous evil of the two gunmen, where was the antisemitism to be found at Bondi on that terrible day?"
He then made it worse by condemning “the immediate politicization of the massacre by the Israel lobby.” Then he moved to his contention that the ISIS-inspired massacre of Jews at a Bondi Hanukkah celebration “showcased multiculturalism” because people of “every creed, color, and background” rushed to help. He then decided to top it all off by saying the attack was a “refutation of antisemitism.”

Every year the High Holidays arrive with the same government warning: protect the synagogues.
Not because Jews are going to war. Because they are going to pray.
This is not about Israel. It is about Jews. And it is a disgrace that we have accepted it as normal.
A good question on how China is still receiving Iranian oil despite sanctions.
Sanctions do not stop the oil. They only force it onto a different circuit.
Before Trump left the JCPOA in 2018, Sinopec and CNPC were Iran's big customers — dollar-financed, Western-insured, listed in New York and Hong Kong. When Washington came through Beijing with what one official called "almost like an ultimatum," they skipped their orders even after Washington granted a temporary waiver, then walked entirely when that waiver expired in May 2019. They did not want to risk getting cut out of the dollar system.
So the trade changed clothes. Chinese customs have shown zero oil imports from Iran for years. Tanker trackers tell a different story — over a million barrels per day at points last year, now down to roughly 530k bpd in August per Kpler, one of the leading commodities and shipping data analytics companies. That latest figure is down from about 823k in July as the war and blockade has squeezed the flow.
The mechanism: Iranian crude gets relabeled at sea. Ship-to-ship transfers off Johor, Malaysia — outside anyone's jurisdiction — turn Iranian cargo into "Malaysian" cargo on paper. The volume gap shows up in the numbers: Chinese customs report zero from Iran while "Malaysian" imports run well above what Malaysia produces.
The buyers left holding this trade are many independent so-called "teapot" refiners in the eastern coastal province of Shandong. Those refiners have no dollar exposure, no Western insurers, nothing for Treasury to leverage the way it can pressure Sinopec and CNPC. Payments for the teapot refiners move in yuan through China's Cross-Border Interbank Payment System — essentially China's alternative to SWIFT for clearing yuan-denominated payments internationally. Small regional banks, like the Bank of Kunlun, was sanctioned since 2012, are still in the plumbing. None of it touches the U.S. financial system.
That's why "maximum pressure" keeps hitting the same wall. You can sanction a thousand vessels and dozens of teapots. Until Chinese refiners, banks, and the Malaysia transfer point actually stop, Iran still has a buyer for most of what it can move. Everyone else is scared of secondary sanctions. China is not.
This is not the 19-year-old girl who was buried to her neck and stoned to death in Afghanistan
This photo is of Zarmina, a victim of the Taliban that is burned into the memory of all of us old enough to have lived through that moment. Zarmina was the mother of seven, and her husband savagely beat her and their two eldest two daughters nightly. They finally reached their breaking point and killed him.
The Taliban tortured and beat Zarmina for 3 years in prison. And then, on November 16, 1999, the Taliban made her kneel on the penalty spot in Kabul’s Olympic Stadium and one of her husband’s relatives shot her through the head in front of 30,000 people. Brave activists from The Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan, smuggled a harrowing video clip out of the country.
And as for Zarmina’s children? Under Islamic law, the 16 and 14-year-old daughters were given to the husband’s brother. He sold them into sex slavery to a man in Khost, then a Taliban stronghold. The haggling over the price for the girls is what had delayed their mother’s execution.
Zarmina’s corpse lay unclaimed for 20 days in the morgue. Her own mother was afraid to collect her daughter’s body. Zarmina eventually was buried in an unmarked grave north of Kabul.
That barbaric Taliban lost power after 9/11. We hoped they were relegated to the dust bin of notorious history. But after America left the country in 2021, a new generation Taliban returned and began enforcing again their medieval version of Islamic fundamentalism. Girls banned from school. Women banned from work, parks, even raising their voices. Men in charge no matter what they do to women.
Sharia law under the Taliban is a poisonous ideology that has nothing but contempt for women. And in 2026, we get the silence as we did in 1999 from the people who never stop lecturing the rest of us about “women’s rights.”
