LEDGER CTO WARNS OF MASSIVE SUPPLY CHAIN ATTACK AFFECTING CRYPTO WALLETS

- A serious supply chain attack has shaken the crypto ecosystem. A trusted npm account was compromised, spreading malicious code capable of tracking and diverting wallet transactions, per Charles Guillemet, CTO of Ledger.

- Guillemet urged users to avoid browser-based and desktop wallets for now. He stressed that hardware wallets with secure screens remain the safest option, though users must still verify every detail.

- Researchers say the compromised npm packages may inject address-swapping malware. This technique silently replaces a recipient’s wallet address with that of the attacker, draining assets across all chains.

- The maintainer of the hijacked account admitted losing control, most likely through a fake 2FA process and social engineering. The account has not yet been recovered, and many infected packages are still circulating.

- NPM is a core tool for JavaScript projects, including countless crypto applications. By infiltrating a trusted developer’s account, attackers gain the ability to push “updates” that look safe but carry hidden payloads.

- The risk is especially high for web wallets, decentralized exchanges, and other apps that interact directly with on-chain funds.

- Security experts are advising developers to freeze dependencies, audit code, and check lockfiles.

- Users are being told to avoid signing new transactions until the threat is contained.

- This is not the first time crypto has faced a supply chain breach. In 2023, Ledger’s own Connect Kit was compromised. The latest incident shows that open-source ecosystems remain a prime target for attackers exploiting trust at scale.

- The full scope of the npm attack is still under investigation.
