ok so we got NØNOS booting on 3 real laptop this week and need to talk about it because i kinda value journey experience sharing.

Bootloader does measured boot, pulls an attestation quote off the TPM, checks a rollback index against the TPM's monotonic counter. All of that worked even the anti rollback with dirty kernel was rejected and the first boot on the actual box dead at the splash and i mean the bootloader finished cleanly. It printed "handoff to kernel" and then the machine just sat there with absolute zero panic, no reset, nothing. Which is the worst possible failure because it tells you exactly nothing.

It's a laptop. So the first thing you build is eyes: raw writes into the UEFI GOP framebuffer at each init milestone, before the kernel has a console. Now the screen is your printk.

Primitive, but it turns "it's dead" into "it's dead at stage 4" and that's the entire game.

Then the fun starts and every single one of these is a thing the emulator papered over:

i) GOP stride. The UEFI spec says PixelsPerScanLine is in pixels. Some firmware puts bytes in that field. So your stride is off by 4x, every scanline lands in the wrong place and if you sanity-check it (we did) you reject your own framebuffer and go headless. The fix is to notice that a byte-stride is always >= width*4 and a pixel-stride never is, so you can tell them apart and normalize. Nobody tells you this. You find it by staring.

ii) We had a little Bochs-VGA proof-of-concept driver that would probe, find a display adapter and helpfully re-mode it. In the emulator there's no such adapter so it no-ops. On real hardware it grabs the panel and resets it out from under the compositor about two seconds after boot. Killed it in the enumerator.

iii) This one cost two days and im still annoyed. Firmware handed the CPU to the kernel with EFER.NXE clear. Our page tables use the NX bit, because of course they do, it's not 2004. First data access through an NX-marked page: reserved-bit page fault. No IDT loaded yet. Fault in the fault. Triple fault. The box resets or wedges depending on mood, and you get nothing on the way out. The fix is a two-instruction rdmsr/wrmsr to set NXE before you load CR3.

…. then the desktop painted. Our compositor, our window manager, signed capsules, the whole attestation chain, on a cheap/med consumer laptop from a cold start.

Now i've got an on-screen heartbeat wired into the timer ISR, so the next boot tells me in one glance whether the tick is firing. Either it blinks or it doesn't.

That's what bare-metal bring-up actually is. It is not architecture astronautics. It is reading Intel SDM volume 3, finding the one paragraph that matters and realizing the firmware ignored it. seL4 went through this. Linux has been eating these bugs for thirty years and still finds new ones. We're doing it now, one MSR at a time.

We are still in line with the beta release and if you've got a laptop, I want your model and CPU and eventually a boot log. Especially the failures. The failures are the data.

Utility is where I think the market is headed.

As liquidity returns, I expect projects with real products, enterprise adoption, and clear value capture to outperform pure speculation.

$AUKI is one of the projects on that list that I'm watching most closely. If Physical AI continues gaining momentum, the demand for spatial intelligence infrastructure could grow alongside it.
