BREAKING: PAGASA says El Niño now present in Tropical Pacific—will strengthen in coming months, and may cause droughts & water shortages.
El Niño bears the thumbprint of climate change, which is only getting worse. It will also exacerbate the impacts of the climate crisis.
Claiming climate "tipping point" because of El Niño is no better than claiming "global warming paused" because of La Niña. Climate deniers used the latter false claim to hijack climate policy discourse & action for a decade. Let's be better than them. 🧵

17.23 °C is 3°C warmer than 14±0.5°C Earth over 12000 years, fr last Ice Age to Industrial Revolution. Now, we have 3rd Super-El Nino in 15 years. 91% of heat due to global warming is in oceans, reinforcing El Nino, causing massive heat & weather extremes

Not to be outdone by the daily record for the GMST (global mean surface temperature), the planet's oceans (60S-60N) also recorded their hottest ever July 9.
This, as El Niño was officially declared by the WMO on July 4. In other words, the oceans are going to get a lot hotter.
Cooler La Niña years are hotter than the hottest El Niño years less than a decade ago. So when an El Niño comes, like now, there's no analogue. Record heat becomes inevitable. We're in unchartered climate territory
How can anyone on the planet look at these graphics from today and attempt an explanation?
Hunga-Tonga. Saharan Dust. IMO 2020. El Nino.
If there's a climate scientist who can say something more definitive than this is an unprecedented concurrence of f&%keries, let them speak!
Historically, this is the time of the year we should really start to see the effects of El Niño on global Sea Surface Temperatures.
But there is no historic precedence of what's happening now.
