Interviewed Alain Bertaud at Stripe this morning, and he said something that I quite enjoyed (paraphrasing): "Part of the purpose of innovation is to avoid the Solzhenitsyn experience in The Life of Denisovich... where every day is predictable. That is the definition of inhumanity. As humans, we need change." I hadn't really thought about the idea of non-predictability as a positive good.
Most people who do evil believe they are doing good.
So for everyone here who is absolutely certain that you are on the side of good should perhaps step back and consider the possibility that you are wrong.
This is difficult, but necessary.
People go through their whole lives without realizing that if, like, one conference center's worth of open source developers all happened to disappear at the same time, humanity would end up gnawing bones in a cave by the end of the year.
I don't know your names, but thank you.
“Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy.
“As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny 'failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions.'
"In 1984, Huxley added, 'people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure.'
“In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.” — Neil Postman from his novel, Amusing Ourselves to Death
The scary math behind the world’s safest assets: Washington has laid the seeds of a crisis that Wall Street can no longer ignore. Around three-quarters of Treasurys must be rolled over within 5yrs. Say you added just 1ppt to the avg interest rate in the CBO’s forecast and kept every other number unchanged. That would result in an additional $3.5tn in federal debt by 2033. The govt’s annual interest bill alone would then be ~$2tn. For perspective, individual income taxes are set to bring in only $2.5tn this year. https://t.co/coHFvIAIYK
