I got an email from a company earlier today (rejection of course). And just as a joke (cuz I didn't figure anyone would monitor the email), I responded something like, "yeah you don't want an old guy with a quarter century of software engineering experience!"

Within like 5 minutes, I got an email back saying that they are not allowed to consider my age, my rejection was because the [system] (they didn't say whether it was ATS or AI) stated that I was basically an intern level candidate. (keep in mind, the last 13 years of my career has been me working for myself and running business)!

About four years ago, Abuja almost humbled me.

I had a flat tyre just after Apo Bridge, close to Apo Roundabout. I parked by the roadside to fix it. If you've stayed in Abuja, you know the sun there does not joke. That Abuja sun can roast confidence. Lol.

While battling with the tyre, I noticed a young guy and a lady standing nearby. From body language alone, you could tell they were lovers. They looked like people waiting for a taxi to Nyanya. Normal young couple.

Then a very clean Lexus SUV pulled up. Immediately, my mind said, “Oh, their ride don land. Omo see levels.”

But life had other plans.

The car had a driver. In the back seat sat an elderly man. You know the type. Calm, comfortable, no hurry in life.

The driver called the girl.
She walked to the car. They spoke briefly. Next thing, the girl turned back, walked to the guy she was standing with, hugged him small, like a farewell hug, and without any drama, turned back and entered the Lexus.

The car moved. Just like that keh? Ahhhh.

No shouting. No argument. No explanation.

Bro stood there like NEPA just seized power inside his head. Hands folded. Eyes fixed on the road. Watching the car disappear like a bad dream. You know when Sabinus does that his "pho-to" signature.

After some seconds, he walked up to me and said,
“Sir… you see wetin just happen?”

I said, “Yes. I see am.”

He laughed. That painful laugh. Then he said,
“Na my girlfriend be that oh. 3 years relationship. Na me dey pay her rent. I wan marry her. Old man just carry her go.”

I didn’t know what to say at that point.
As we talked, he opened up. He said he had caught her cheating before. Not once. Twice. But he loved her. He had invested too much. Money, time, emotion. He said he couldn’t allow another man win her from him. That he needs to hustle more. In my head, this guy get sense so?

At that point, I knew advice would be a waste of the hot eba and okra soup I had just eaten from Mama Joshua at Wuse.

When a man is fighting to keep someone who has already left emotionally, whatever he sees, let him take it like that.

What shocked me most was this. The guy was tall. Broad. Looked strong. Very masculine. But inside, he was already finished. Watery beans.

I just told him, “Follow your heart bro.”

I fixed my tyre and left.

This is not fiction. This thing happened.

And the scary part is this. There are many people living this same life quietly. Pretending everything is fine. Marrying people they already lost long before the wedding.

Then tomorrow, they will come online and become marriage experts.

This incumbent government has done absolutely nothing to benefit anybody in its 3 years of power.. instead they've come up with various ways to make life harder than it already was for the average person.
