Education Secretary Linda McMahon (@EDSecMcMahon) has told every U.S. university it must publicly recommit to academic excellence by Dec. 31 as trust in higher education hits historic lows.

In a letter to presidents and governing boards, she asked each school to publish a statement affirming dedication to rigorous standards, research, and national service.

A Pew survey found 70 percent of Americans believe the sector is headed in the wrong direction over cost, job preparation, and limited viewpoints. McMahon listed seven priorities, including merit-based admissions, free speech, intellectual pluralism, affordability, academic rigor, research integrity, and American interests.
