«Se produjo un gran desprendimiento del lecho rocoso que arrastró consigo parte del glaciar», explicó el geomorfólogo Dan Shugar.

Su colega Kristen Cook lo describió como «el derrumbe de una gran masa de lecho rocoso donde se encontraba apoyado el glaciar. El suelo situado bajo el glaciar se derrumbó y arrastró al glaciar consigo». Cook declaró al New York Times que «la roca sobre la que se asentaba el glaciar se derrumbó».

Otro glaciólogo, Jakob Steiner, se mostró de acuerdo y explicó que «básicamente, la parte inferior de la lengua del glaciar se desprendió porque la la ladera de roca subyacente cedió».

Dan Shugar explico al Times: «Básicamente, se derrumbó un trozo de la ladera de la montaña». Sin embargo, el titular final del Times es engañoso: «Un deslizamiento de tierra, junto con el colapso del glaciar, probablemente desencadenó las inundaciones en Nepal». Es engañoso porque fue el deslizamiento de tierra lo que provocó el desprendimiento del glaciar y no hubo ningún “colapso del glaciar” previo.

La hipótesis más plausible es que la actividad de sísmica en el Himalaya, con continuos pequeños terremotos y cada ciertos años alguno grande, haya contribuido a ese enorme deslizamiento de roca. El mayor terremoto en la zona ocurrió en 2015, de 7,8 de magnitud, con epicentro casi debajo de la misma montaña, pero en la cara sur (ver vídeo en el post siguiente).

El calentamiento global no provoca que la roca madre se rompa. El argumento del “derretimiento del permafrost” tampoco se sostiene, porque las temperaturas están bajo cero a los 5200 metros de altura donde el glaciar se encuentra. Incluso durante el verano no hay muchos días con temperaturas del aire superiores a 0 °C. No todos los desastres ambientales que ocurren deben atribuirse al cambio climático.

Contrary to the TVK govt’s claim and promise of transparency in tenders, the 5.54 crore tender for chief minister C Joseph Vijay’s 10th floor Sea-View office at Namakkal Kavignar Maligai is shrouded in secrecy and has deviated from mandatory tender rules.

First, none of the three tenders was floated online.

Second, even before the tender process began, dismantling and other works had started, indicating finalisation of a contractor, before any tender was floated.

Third, the tenders were published in newspapers and went online four days later, that too after TOI sought responses from officials about the absence of an e-tender. And finally, the print and e-version of the tenders were different, with the former specifying 5.54 crore as tender value, while the latter was silent on the sum mentioning NA.

The delay in floating tenders online was striking PWD had floated 135 tenders online between Aug 12 and 17, while the three CMO tenders remained offline until TOI raised the issue.

SIAM writes a letter to Govt, warning about E20 petrol causing huge problems.

1. Automakers (SIAM members) flag HUGE increase in engine part replacements/repairs post E20 petrol rollout nationwide. Yes, post E20.

2. Excess chloride (contamination) in E20 petrol also observed. Again, post E20. Before E20, chloride contamination was NOT a widespread problem.

3. Moisture in E20 petrol also causing problems says SIAM. Again, post E20.

4. SIAM has been flagging this problem (chloride contamination) for 2 years at BIS meetings. No action taken.

What did Govt do?

1. It made the news outlet that put out details of this letter take down the story.

2. Then it made SIAM 'recall' the letter.

Petroleum minister needs to explain. If he cannot competently run the ministry, he must go. Enough of this nonsense!

A repeat of the chilling Kerala story in Agra - and this is as alarming as it can get

The Agra story starts in 2020 when Anshu Bhatia, a 35-year-old woman from Agra pursuing PhD in Zoology, began to be indoctrinated into Islam by her Kashmiri classmate Saima alias Khushboo

She stopped Hindu rituals, started doing namaz and wearing hijab

In 2021, Anshu went to Kashmir without telling her parents. There, she converted in a mosque

Acting on her father Anil Bhatia’s missing persons’ complaint, Agra police traced Anshu in Kashmir and brought her back

Anshu left the house again last year - and this time with her 19-year-old sister Diya Bhatia

Their father filed an FIR naming Saima. He accused her of facilitating kidnapping of his daughters for their marriages to Muslim men

Police traced the women, found them in Bengal and brought them back

By this time, Uttar Pradesh had already seen the busting of several organised conversion rackets, including major ones run by Mohd Kaleem Siddiqui, Maulana Umar Gautam and Mufti Qazi Jahangir Alam

All of these men have already been convicted and given life sentence by NIA court for waging war against state and illegal conversions

And so, Agra police started a deeper investigation into the sisters’ case

Police found an organised conversion racket spanning several states including UP, Delhi, Rajasthan, J&K, Bengal etc

Agra police filed the chargesheet last month, naming 14 accused for crimes like running an organised crime syndicate, attack on India's sovereignty, unity and integrity and illegal conversions

Many accused are converts to Islam including Ayesha, formerly SB Krishna; Mohd Ibrahim, formerly Rith Banik; Mustafa, formerly Manoj Kanojia; Mohd Ali, formerly Piyush Pawar, and Hasan Ali, formerly Shekhar

As per the chargesheet, their operation received foreign funding, has terror links, and is masterminded by Syed Dawood, who is suspected of hiding in Canada

And now the shocking twist

A habeas corpus petition was recently filed before Allahabad High Court by one Kunwar Sultan Ali - that the two women were being wrongfully detained by their father at his house

The women told the Court that they had converted to Islam voluntarily. The High Court accepted their account and held their confinement illegal, ordering that they can live wherever they want

But the court went further

It has ordered that the father and the UP govt jointly pay Rs 25 lakh in compensation to the two women

Contrast this case with what happened just last month: a UP court convicted one Shakir Hussain of kidnapping, raping, forcibly confining and forcibly converting a Hindu woman and her minor daughter - and the fine imposed on him was less than Rs 1.5 lakh.
