A Skywatcher’s Link to an Ancient City

This week the Moon draws close to the Pleiades, the bright cluster of stars known as the Seven Sisters. On the night of 27–28 October it will pass right beside them, and in some places it will even briefly hide a few of the stars from view. Easy to spot with the naked eye, the cluster looks even more striking through binoculars.

By Thursday, 29 October, look east a few hours after sunset to see the Pleiades followed by the V-shaped Hyades in the constellation Taurus. The bright orange star Aldebaran appears to complete the “V,” though it is much closer to us and does not actually belong to the Hyades. The Pleiades lies about 444 light-years away, while the Hyades is only about 153 light-years distant.

These same stars also left their mark on an ancient city. Long ago, the people who built Teotihuacan aligned its main street—the Avenue of the Dead—about 15.5 degrees east of true north. Scholars note that this deliberate tilt corresponds to the setting of the Pleiades and to key positions of Venus, both of which held deep importance for farming and for religious belief across Mesoamerica.
