hi. i’m an engineer who has spent some time optimizing webpages to collect more $$
happy to offer a lil pro-bono consulting to any abortion funds that want help improving online donations or understanding donation behavior, if that’s useful
hahaha i am in the sierras, on a multi-week hike of the JMT, and ofc this trip perfectly coincides w/ the first severe CA wildfire of the season. love living in the anthropocene!! 🫠 #oakfire
@YoseMom wary about maintaining that level of confidence - have talked to hikers in both directions who have reported smoke and low visibility. not worried about being enveloped in flames, more worried about strenuous activity w smoke particles
one learning: i previously figured that once you have symptoms, rapid tests would be able to pick up signal…but nope, turns out that’s not the case
false negatives are quite tricky; it’s surprising that tests come w lotsa info on procedure, little info on interpreting results
i’ve found rapid tests pretty confusing, so here’s my anecdotal experience if useful:
day 0: exposed at a wedding (welp)
day 3: developed sore throat, 2 negative rapid tests
day 4: sore throat, negative rapid test, pending pcr
day 5: sore throat, positive rapid test
in toronto, bikeshare is free for one day every week?? rapid tests are abundant and free at pharmacies??
coming from the us, these lil bits of public generosity are mind-blowing
(i’ve heard similar things from many ppl; if you happen to be the type to believe that you need to have work obligations to stay sane / that rest is boring, it’s worth questioning imo)
@amyngyn - cardboard scratchers ftw, surprising longevity
- if they’re food motivated, teach em tricks! was surprised to learn that my cat is easier to train than a dog
- do NOT put a cat tree next to your bed, they will dive onto your body
- try playing youtube videos of birds/mice/etc
@lenifaye and some stuff for post-hire:
- pay equity / fair leveling / regular reassessment as org grows
- minimum time off or culture of people in leadership taking time off
- mental / physical health stipends
- learning stipends
@lenifaye all these kinds of policies feel kinda small tho, and the more impactful things are squishier - norms set by leadership, makeup of a team, etc. a lotta things feel tougher to have concrete policies around, eg inequities in sourcing (to what extent referrals are incentivized, etc)
