Unpopular opinion: aiming for zero downtime migrations should be the norm, not the exception at most places.
Yes, there's always a cost to do a zero-downtime migration. BUT this cost is less, the more you do this approach. It also makes for much better engineering cultures!

"How can I build a better relationship with my product manager, as an engineering manager or engineer?"
Here are a few approaches. What else have you found works well?
Yesterday was the last day of #RailsConf2021.
During these days we watched many interesting talks, learned new things and got excited for what's coming next.
Both #ruby and #rails are here, alive and thriving.
@railsconf Congratulations and thank you for the wonderful conference.
An obvious point that took me way too long to appreciate: in software engineering, you should probably optimize for speed even when you don't have to, because it's one of the easiest/best ways to prioritize subtraction and parsimony in the solution space. https://t.co/kYulYoV3uN.
Ι am always impressed by the sophistication of the tools we build to deal with real-word problems, our product classifier is one of these cases. @SkroutzDevs https://t.co/XFobwc6vUt
Wanna build something new? Your first focus should be to create a fast feedback loop. Usually by writing a small script, or a test. It's basic, but we usually underestimate its value.
Part of the job of being an engineer is managing complexity. Applying the latest and greatest or whatever BigCo tells you is the “best practice” is an abdication of your responsibility to use the simplest tools that accomplish the job.
As it turned out, 82% our N+1 query cases @SkroutzDevs could be auto-detected before hitting production using a modified version of the awesome bullet gem! https://t.co/1QbBJINzrv

For me becoming a senior engineer has meant learning not to be afraid to write hilariously dumb and slow code. Half of the time it won’t matter and the other half of the time I can just go back and optimize it later.
