@jakobgreenfeld I think indiehackers are going to get a *lot* less press compared to VC-backed and even social media strategic bootstrapped founders, so itās harder to see the revolution. At least in my tech circles, Iām seeing people want to build something of their own more
Every time you dig deeper into the āYou can earn $$$$ in just x weeksā, youāll quickly find that thereās no course, PDF, or eBook that can replace long-term *intentional and consistent* effort. But thatās admittedly not as exciting as ā$$$ in 3 weeksā š
āAs the founder, you have a lot of power to shape the narrativeā. - Maria Barrera, CEO @clayfulhealth
Founders need to become powerful storytellers who understand how to weave their story based on their audiences. Itās critical for fundraising.
What's a common startup myth you've found to be untrue?
Easily for me it's that the best companies raise venture capital.
Once you talk to a few VCs you'll realize the best storytellers raise capital, it has little to do with how good your company actually is.
This is why you canāt skip talking and **listening** to your users. You need to be a subject matter expert on what they want, which is also why you canāt start off trying to build for āeveryoneā. For everyone = for no one
Jeff Bezos: āYou donāt understand my audienceā
When Charlie Rose asks him if the iPad is a āKindle killerā in this 2012 interview, Jeff gives an incredible response:
āItās a very different product, and I can give you an example. If I came to you and said: āCharlie, I love your show, but weāve got to sex it up. We need fast cuts and vicious arguments between your guests.ā You would rightly say to me: āJeff, I love you man, but you donāt understand my audience. We have a cerebral conversation here. Itās what we do, and itās how weāre differentiated.āā
He continues:
āWhen people come to me and say: āYouāve got to have full-motion video and color on the Kindle.ā I say: āWhy? You think Hemingway is going to pop more in color?ā⦠You donāt understand my audience.ā
Jeff goes on to explain that the vision for the Kindle is: a purposeful device for reading where no tradeoffs have been madeāevery single design decision is optimized for reading.
And knowing exactly who his audience is gives him conviction in the Kindle teamās design decisionsāeven when everyone at the time was saying that the iPad would crush them.
To drive home the point of just how different the audiences for the iPad and Kindle are, he points out:
āThe #1 thing people are doing on their iPads right now is playing a game called Angry Birds⦠The #1 thing people are doing on their Kindle right now is reading Stieg Larsson.ā
One of the laws of marketing is that if you try to make a product that appeals to everyone, it will end up appealing to no one. Jeff understood this as well as anybody, and this interview demonstrates that.
Currently reading the Indie Hacker newsletter editions that I missedā¦kinda wish there was an Indie Hacker-type community for newsletter creators. Maybe there is and I havenāt seen it yet?
Awesome data.
I share a lot of deals w/our angel community. ~1/30 founders I offer that to opts out bc they want $50k+ checks. Huge loss on their part!
A $5k angel check can result in customer intros, investor intros, advice around the clock, round momentum, etc.
@katairobi Asking for help from people who have done it before instead of suffering first, being more public about the things I care about and am working on, and being intentional about where I spend my time!
@Juliet_Lyall Iāve been reaching out to founders who are about to or are raising a pre-seed through various channels! I also ask for replies in my newsletter. Still trying to figure out the best way š
Doing this in part by making sure I ask my target audience about their knowledge gaps. Breaking out of my comfort zone with this newsletter to help pre-seed founders with fundraising. Excited!
š£ļøIf you start a newsletter this year:
1. Make sure you include original content: data, your insights, your learnings, your ideas
2. Make sure you include original content
3. Make sure you include original content
Different will win.
You CANNOT reverse engineer originality!
@HeyJeffFelten This has been the hardest part for me! Have to get comfortable with talking about my newsletter more on socials. Canāt let a personal hurdle stop me!
š£ļø Next edition of FVS comes out in just 1 hour and 10min for pre-seed founders looking to fundraise.
