Why Crescent University Mass Communication Leads
By Idris Katib
Every parent or prospective student has a reason for choosing a course of study and institution offering the programme. One of such reasons is performance of products, after graduation, in postgraduate studies, employment and entrepreneurship. Crescent University Mass Comm satisfies these three variables.
The slogan "our first class is world class" came about when an alumna, Dr Rafiat Gawat Raji, a first class product of Crescent Mass Comm went to Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, to replicate the feat at her Master's programme.Soon after that, other alumni from other departments of Crescent University followed suit in their further studies in Europe, American and Asian universities. This is a topic for another day.
It is gratifying that numerous Crescent University Mass Comm products have since occupied top positions in the industry. The current national Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Customs Service, Aliyu Maiwada, Head of Corporate Communications of Keystone Bank, Rasheed Bolarinwa, Owners of Platform Times, Platform Africa, NewsHub, The Business Package and several others are all products of Crescent University Mass Communication.
This department has also proudly produced two distinguished editorial staffers for the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC). Adedeji Ajayi and Abayomi Adisa were Deployments Editor and Senior Journalists, making their Alma Matter, Crescent University proud.
Unlike many Departments of Mass Communication in Nigeria which lay more emphasis on media theories and even set their examination questions as objectives, Crescent University Mass Communication
majorly bases its training on practical, hands on tutoring of students. This is evident as lecturers blend their teaching with industry experience. It also reflects in the manner with which examination questions are set-an industry related approach.
Remarkably, Crescent University Department of Mass Communication recorded arguably one of the highest National Universities Commission's accreditation scores three consecutive times, scoring 90% in 2012, 93.5% in 2018 and 92% in 2023. No department of mass communication in any Nigerian university, arguably, has this hat trick of 90% score by the regulatory body.
It is also on record that Crescent University Mass Comm. trains students in specialist journalism in which over a dozen of specialized newspapers and magazines are produced every session by students for their practical training in news writing, news editing, headline casting, proofreading, opinion writing, advert copy writing, editorial writing, caption writing and page planning. The students' training print production includes: Image Frontier, Newsmakers, OnStage, Airwaves, FoodSecurity, Health Matters, Agro Insight and many more.
These are in addition to teaching and mentoring in Digital Broadcasting, Digital Public Relations plus Advertising, Artificial Intelligence and Film and Cinematography.

Crescent University alumna tops ICAN exams
A first class graduate of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Rofeeqoh Adeyinka Odunmbaku, has emerged as top performer in the just released November 2025 Diet of the professional examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN).
Odunmbaku emerged as second overall best out of over 2,000 candidates that undertook the prestigious examinations.
Head of Department of Accounting, Crescent University, Prof. Tunji Siyanbola broke the news to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila while also presenting the invitation letter of induction by ICAN.
A letter of invitation to induction ceremony of May, 2026, signed by Deputy Director, Membership Affairs, ICAN, Shakiru Akanni Balogun, FCA under the title "Prize Winners of the Institute's Professional Examinations-November 2025 Diet" was addressed to Odunmbaku as follows:
"The Membership Affairs Committee, on behalf of the Council, wishes to congratulate you as one of the prize winners in the November 2025 Diet of the Institute's professional examinations.
"You are hereby invited to the Induction Ceremony for newly admitted members of the Institute during which your prize will be presented to you"
In a chat, Odunmbaku attributed her success to Crescent University. In her words, " Crescent University contributed greatly to my success academically and morally. The university provided an environment that encouraged excellence, discipline and continuous learning. The support and encouragement from lecturers, mentors and colleagues also played an important role in my journey ", she commented.
According to her, "the journey was not completely smooth. I wrote the skills level three times before succeeding. I saw failure as a stepping stone which taught me resilience, patience and consistency".
In a related development, a lecturer of the Department of Accounting of Crescent University, Dr Abdulfatah Nurudeen, has also become an associate chartered member of ICAN. He was inducted along with Odunmbaku at the ceremony held between 12th and 13th May, 2026 in Lagos.
It is recalled that the duo of Ibrahim Gafar Olatunji and Rofiat Olaleye of the same department had performed excellently in the earlier Diet of the 2025 ICAN professional examinations.
The vice chancellor lauded Crescent University Department of Accounting for consistently producing qualified chartered accountants in its two decades of existence.
