Cubastudies is the Twitter account of the International Institute for the Study of Cuba, dedicated to a dispassionate and reasoned understanding of the island.
In Havana’s Rampa neighborhood, the El Rampeño SAF center provides daily meals and support to vulnerable residents thanks to support from local private businesses.
But as U.S. sanctions and an oil blockade disrupt food deliveries, keeping its kitchen running has become difficult
🚨#BREAKING: The only U.S. study abroad program with a physical presence in Cuba has shut down amid escalating U.S. military threats, sanctions and an oil blockade.
Since 2015, the Consortium for Advanced Studies Abroad (CASA) has brought hundreds of U.S. students to the island.
How can we produce food more sustainably? 🇨🇺 At the FAO’s World Food Forum, Cuba is sharing experience in science, agricultural innovation and resilience. Food security requires cooperation and knowledge-based solutions. #FoodSecurity
Hace 29 años los restos del Che Guevara retornaron a Santa Clara. El 14 de octubre de 1997, el comandante Fidel Castro inauguró el Memorial en su memoria. "No llega para ser sepultado, sino para multiplicar su legado". #teleSUR#Cuba#CheGuevara#14Oct
🌞🇨🇺 Solar energy is delivering results for Cuba's power generation capacity. Effective maintenance of thermoelectric plants and cooler temperatures are also helping to cut down on blackouts.
But make no mistake: What could have been a steady, low-cost, and well-organized transition of the energy matrix has effectively turned into a race for Cuba's survival amid a criminal U.S. fuel blockade.

.@CarlosFdeCossio: "It is not enough for the world’s greatest economic, technological and military power to impose collective punishment on the entire Cuban people and to depress the living standards and conditions of the whole population with the aim of inducing a humanitarian crisis.
Faced with the political and moral isolation of that genocidal aggression, it devotes vast resources to pressuring the world’s governments to change their traditional position demanding an end to the abuse and the crime.
The U.S. Secretary of State is traipsing from country to country and calling heads of state on the phone in a desperate effort to intimidate, blackmail and promise carrots to governments in every latitude.
👉The goal, in the year of the greatest intensification of the economic war, is to blame the country under attack, discredit the victim, and thereby try to change a position that the international community has historically and unmistakably maintained in rejection of the economic blockade."👈
#CubaIsNotAThreat, the blockade is!
❤️🚨A HOSPITAL IN YAGUAJAY RECEIVES A SOLAR PANEL DONATION FROM CUBANS LIVING IN EUROPE.
The "Joaquín Paneca Consuegra" General Hospital in Yaguajay now has 48 solar panels, 12 kW inverters, and 15 kW batteries installed, providing a total backup of 90 kW of power — thanks to a donation sent by Cubans residing in European countries. 🙌
This is what solidarity looks like — Cubans abroad, united across borders, fighting the U.S. blockade with solar energy!
🇨🇺SURFACEN: The Cuban drug born to save newborns is now taking on asthma and other respiratory diseases.
For over 30 years, Surfacen — a natural surfactant derived from porcine lung lavage — has drastically reduced infant mortality in Cuba by treating respiratory distress in premature babies. It's one of only 5 human-use pulmonary surfactants in the world.
Now, Dr. Odalys Blanco Hidalgo and a team of researchers have won the 2025 Academy of Sciences Award for expanding its therapeutic potential across three fronts:
1️⃣ Biophysical studies — adding hyaluronic acid to make Surfacen more resistant to inflammatory degradation (with the Complutense University of Madrid)
2️⃣ Asthma — reformulated for inhalation, showing bronchodilator & anti-inflammatory effects. A pediatric clinical trial is already underway in Havana hospitals.
3️⃣ Drug combinations — pairing Surfacen with antibiotics and protease inhibitors, showing no interference and even synergy. Like a surfer (antibiotic) riding a wave (Surfacen) through the respiratory system. 🏄
Despite the economic challenges caused by the blockade, Cuban science pushes forward. A drug born to save the youngest is now proving it can save lives across respiratory medicine.
🚨CAMAGÜEY ADVANCES ON SOLAR ENERGY: The 21.8 MW Ortigal solar farm, in Eastern Cuba, is racing to connect its first 4 inverters to the national grid this October. With groundwork nearly complete, perimeter fencing up, and panels mounted on over 600 of 900 tables, phase one is already 75% done. ☀️
Once running, those first inverters will generate 13–14 MW during peak sunlight hours. Specialized crews are working weekends to get it done.
Meanwhile, Camagüey is also mounting panels at the 2.2 MW Lesca park in Sierra de Cubitas and pushing ahead on Guáimaro 2 (5 MW + storage), expected to deliver its first 2 MW this month.
You CAN´T BLOCK THE SUN!!!

🇨🇺 On 10 October 1868, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes launched Cuba’s struggle for independence at La Demajagua. The mambises carried that fight forward.
158 years later, amid the US blockade, Cuba defends the same principle: its future belongs to its people.

Today marks the 59th anniversary of the death of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara.
On 8 October 1967, Che was captured in the jungles of Bolivia leading guerrillas in a struggle to free the country from imperialist exploitation.
He was executed on the orders of the CIA the next day.
❤️Another example of solidarity and friendship with Cuba.
Turning on Lights for Life Solar Energy Reaches Cuban Maternity Homes.
MEDICC, a public health nonprofit, has ensured round-the-clock electricity from new solar panels/batteries for seven maternity homes in Havana.
