Literally everyone complaining about The Odyssey should relax.

Yes, Elliott Page was an astroishly bad casting choice, not just because they are trans but because they/them’s acting was horrendous.

But they also got shot with arrows and died in the first 5 minutes.

85% of the movie was objectively awesome. Matt Damon was awesome. The battle scenes were awesome. It was visually stunning. Most of the acting was good.

There’s no such thing as a perfect movie. But sometimes you can just enjoy the good parts and ignore the things you don’t like.

The message of the story is conservative. Nolan tried to make it less so, through his own artistic lens.

It’s a movie many will enjoy and other will think is too “pretentious”.

The end of The Odyssey is literally about coming home to massacre all the strangers who have taken advantage of your hospitality and taking back what is rightfully yours, and the entire journey is also constantly just strange things showing up that often want to kill him and his men, typically by lulling them into false senses of security.

Even as warped and subverted Nolan’s version is from the original, his movie doesn’t at all communicate the need to be hospitable and kind to strangers. That doesn’t actually come through in his telling at all. I don’t even know how he thinks it does. The whole line is quite confusing given what he says and what’s actually shown on screen.

I liked the Odyssey. A couple of things broke the illusion for me, though. One was the ultra-modern language set against the fairly accurate costuming and setting. The other was Zendaya wearing almost the exact same costume as she does in Dune. So much potential for Athena’s dress. Pick any of Z’s premier outfits over this.

Ok, I finally watched the Odyssey. Honest opinion- It’s old cinema junkies trying to keep hold of original techniques without using modern CGI. They cast fringe actors/actresses for a few seconds of screen time obviously for academic award standards. The costumes were terrible. They look like a kindergarten’s project. This whole movie is way overrated. It’s mediocre at best. Nowhere near the level of Troy. imax only works in theaters so it’s going to look like garbage on the Tv when the majority of people watch it. It’s 2026 stop trying to cling onto filming techniques that are relics. Embrace CGI, it’s not your enemy. 3 hours of inflated hype for a mediocre at best movie.
