My heart is with Mayor Jerry Demings and his wife, Val.
Jerry Demings is one of the finest public servants I have had the honor of knowing. As a fellow mayor, I have watched him lead Orange County with steadiness, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to the people he serves. He has built a career defined not by ambition, but by genuine dedication — to his community, to justice, and to making Florida a better place for every family.
A cancer diagnosis is a moment that reminds all of us what truly matters. Jerry is a man of extraordinary strength — strength he has demonstrated throughout his decades in law enforcement and public office. I have no doubt he will bring that same strength, and the deep love of his family and community, to this fight.
Your fellow mayors, your colleagues, and people across the state of Florida are standing with you. As someone who cares deeply about you as a person — not just as a colleague — I want you to know that my prayers and my full support are with you and your family every single day.
To Val, and to the entire Demings family please know how loved you are.
Mayor Demings has dedicated his life to public service, fighting with passion, mettle, and faith. I know he'll bring that same spirit to this new chapter. Laura and I wish him a full recovery as we personally pray for Jerry and his family.
Wilson dominoes: She leaves office, so a county commissioner and state senator who want her seat leave theirs, so a state Rep and Miami Gardens councilwoman who want those seats leave theirs, and so on and so forth
Florida has been fortunate to have Frederica Wilson (@RepWilson) fighting for its people in the halls of Congress. We served in Congress together and I have always held Congresswoman Wilson in the highest regard — as a legislator, as an advocate, and as a genuine force of nature
for the communities she has served.
Frederica Wilson is, above all else, a trailblazer. From the Miami-Dade school system to the Florida State Legislature to the United States Congress, she has never stopped pushing forward — for children, for families, for the forgotten and the underserved. Her distinctive
style — bold, unapologetic, and unforgettable — has always matched the strength of her convictions. She never let Washington change who she was. That is rarer than people know.
Her work on education, military families, and missing and exploited children reflects a career driven by genuine moral purpose, not political calculation. The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project alone stands as a monument to what one person's stubborn belief
in young men can accomplish.
South Florida will feel her absence in Congress. The institution will, too. I wish Congresswoman Wilson every joy in the chapter ahead. She has earned this moment— though knowing Frederica Wilson, rest won't hold her long. Florida is better for her service, and I am proud to have served alongside her in the Florida delegation.
On behalf of Miami-Dade’s nearly 3 million residents, we thank Congresswoman Frederica Wilson for a lifetime of extraordinary service. A daughter of Miami, her legacy as an educator, mentor, and relentless advocate for our community will be felt for generations to come. From the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence Project to countless lives touched across our county, her impact is immeasurable. We are forever grateful for her service, her heart, and her vision.
The $13B figure includes fees and revenue tied to Miami International Airport, PortMiami, garbage bills and water bills. Core services like police, jails, fire, ambulance, libraries, parks, and transit rely on property taxes (and sales taxes). Will do a breakdown in a later post.

This moment belongs to four families.
It belongs to the families of Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre Jr., Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales—the four men murdered on February 24, 1996, when the Cuban regime ordered the shootdown of unarmed Brothers to the Rescue humanitarian aircraft over international waters. Their bodies were never recovered. Their families have never had justice. Now, at long last, they can.
This was not an accident. It was not a misunderstanding. It was an act of state terrorism carried out by the Cuban Air Force against civilians whose only mission was humanitarian rescue.
The indictment of Raúl Castro is the right thing to do—and it is long overdue.
For decades, the families of these men and the Cuban exile community never stopped demanding accountability. They marched, they testified, they held vigils, they kept this memory alive when too many in positions of power were willing to let it fade. They were right to do so.
This is what accountability looks like. This is what the rule of law, applied without fear or political favor, is supposed to look like. And if it took too long to get here, that is a failing we should all reckon with honestly—not a reason to withhold recognition now that justice is finally being pursued.
Florida is home to a community that knows this history not as a headline, but as lived memory. This is not abstract. This is part of our state’s story.
As a candidate for governor of Florida, I want every Cuban American family—and every Floridian—to know: I see this history. I honor the sacrifice of these four men. And as governor, I will ensure that Florida never stops standing on the side of those who demand accountability for the crimes of the Cuban regime.
Justice delayed is still justice.
Today is a good day.
