Charity Cherop has won bronze in the women’s 3,000m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, clocking 8:45.59. Ethiopia’s Yordanos Tsigab took gold, with Shito Gumi silver. It is Cherop’s second medal after 5,000m gold earlier this week.

WATCH: Shafeck Murungi made an impressive start to his campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA, emerging as the fastest qualifier in the men's 800 metres opening-round heats. Competing in his first international race, the 17-year-old clocked a personal best of 1:46.64 to win Heat Two and post the fastest time across all the heats, boosting his prospects ahead of the semi-finals due in the early hours of Saturday. Uganda has previously won two medals in the men's 800 metres at the World Athletics U20 Championships, with Murungi now looking to add to that tally.

UPDATE: Charity Cherop has won Uganda’s first gold medal at the 21st World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, after triumphing in the women’s 5,000m final.
The 19-year-old becomes the fifth Ugandan athlete to win gold at the championships and the first since Joshua Cheptegei’s 2014 victory.
