​The ground didn't just shake—it ruptured.
​In a span of just 39 seconds, northern Venezuela was hit by a catastrophic doublet earthquake. First, a massive 7.2 magnitude quake struck east-northeast of San Felipe. Before the dust could even settle, a second, even more violent 7.5 magnitude monster ripped through the earth southeast of Yumare.
​The images coming out of Caracas look like a horror film. High-rises swaying violently, entire walls collapsing into the streets, roads split wide open, and an eerie blanket of dust swallowing whole neighborhoods. The Simón Bolívar International Airport is shut down, power grids are dark, and cellphone networks are completely severed. Search and rescue teams are working through the night, desperately tearing through concrete rubble with their bare hands to find survivors.
​The Numbers Are Staggering:
While these are early, unconfirmed estimates based on the sheer scale and shallow depth of the twin quakes, the USGS PAGER system warns of a potential worst-case nightmare:
​Up to 100,000 fatalities feared.
​Economic damages that could devour 20% of Venezuela's entire GDP.
​We are looking at a humanitarian crisis of unthinkable proportions unfolding in real time. The full scale of the devastation is still hidden in the dark, but it is clear that millions of lives have changed forever.
