Many Keralites working in the Maldives have reached out to me about the difficulties they are facing in remitting funds home, because of severe restrictions imposed recently on dollar transfers out of the country (since Maldives has a dollar-shortage these days). I’ve suggested a way forward to the Finance Minister @nsitharaman and urged the External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar to intervene as well:

Teachers, nurses, accountants, hairdressers, babysitters, trainers, pilots and several hospitality managers will be gradually closed to expatriates as quotas are cancelled over the next 2–5 years.

On paper, this is called “localisation”. In reality, it will shake the lives of thousands of foreign workers who have spent their best years serving Maldivian schools, hospitals, resorts and homes.
