Now the US State Department's account of the Rubio-Jaishankar call does not even express regret for the Indian lives lost.

This is what subservience looks like. Such arrogance from Washington is possible only because the Modi government refuses to stand up for India's sovereignty and its citizens. The US knows there will be no consequences, no accountability, not even a public condemnation.

Indian lives are not expendable. India must unequivocally condemn this attack, demand justice for the sailors killed, and reject this shameful surrender of sovereignty.

Today is June 11th. On this very day in 2009, Salku Soren, the CPI(M) branch secretary of Binpur Dharampur in Jhargram district, was brutally murdered.
​Maoists and Trinamool cadres tied his hands behind his back, abducted him from his home, and hacked him to death with a tangi (battleaxe).
​They left his dead body out in the open. Under the open sky, his body began to rot and decompose, infested with maggots, as a foul stench spread all around.
​Due to the diktat issued by the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA)—a frontal organization of the Maoists led by Chhatradhar—and the Trinamool forces led by Mamata Bandopadhyay. no one in the village dared to cremate or bury the body. Even his elderly mother, Chitamoni Soren, was not allowed to touch her son's corpse.
​The body lay abandoned under a mango tree in front of the CPI(M) party office for five consecutive days.
​Later, on May Day and during various political programs, local residents and party members began hoisting the red flag at the site of his martyrdom to pay their respects. Even today, Salku's mother, Chitamoni Soren, has not left the CPI(M). She can still be seen marching at the very forefront of political rallies in the area.

Many senior journalists have fallen into the trap of assuming that what is happening to the TMC has always happened in Bengal.

This is patently untrue.

Firstly, Congress leaders and workers stayed with the party throughout the long 34-year tenure of the Left Front.

After the Left Front lost in 2011, it remained largely intact as a political entity despite the campaign of terror unleashed on its cadre in rural Bengal. Even in 2014, the Left Front got a 30% vote-share — a larger number of marginal voters switched, but the core remained with the LF.

In fact, in the 2016 assembly elections the Left and Congress 'Mahajot' retained their aggregate vote share at 39% — roughly the same as what they had got in 2014, when they fought in opposing camps.

The violent ouster of the Left cadre from rural Bengal accelerated after this, peaking during the 2018 Panchayat elections. After that the Left's core base switched en masse to the BJP, instead of joining or backing Mamata Banerjee.

The Left's cadre needed a 'shelter' against the TMC's terror tactics in rural Bengal, and they found it in the BJP, which was in power at the centre.

Not only do voting patterns after 2016 confirm this, but researchers who have worked in rural Bengal have reported this shift as well.

What is happening now to the TMC is an entirely novel process. It is taking place because the TMC sustained itself around a personality cult of sorts. When the leader fell, everyone began deserting the ship.

There is no previous parallel to this in West Bengal's political history.
