Welles Crowther, 24, was an equities trader on the 104th floor of the South Tower. He’d carried a red bandana since he was six and volunteered as a firefighter as a teen.
On September 11, after the plane hit, he called his mother to say he was okay. Then he went to the 78th-floor sky lobby, covered his face with the bandana, and led people to the last open stairwell. He carried one burned woman down 17 flights, went back up, led another group out, and went up again.
The tower fell at 9:59 a.m. He didn’t come back. Survivors later identified him by the red bandana and said he saved as many as 18 lives. His body was found in the lobby with FDNY firefighters. He’d been planning to join them for real.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Michael Weinberg, 34. Off-duty FDNY firefighter.
September 11, 2001. He was at a golf course in Queens when the first plane hit. His sister worked in the second tower.
He left his clubs. Abandoned his car. Caught a ride into Manhattan. Geared up. Went in.
She made it out. He didn’t.
He died under a fire truck when the South Tower fell. One of 343.
He chose her in the time it takes to put down a golf club.
Rest easy, Michael.

Station 24, DeKalb County Fire Rescue, Tucker, GA
Died of injuries sustained after being overcome by fire conditions at a warehouse fire on South Stone Mountain Lithonia Road. Crews rescued him and rushed him to Grady, where he succumbed. 21-year veteran. Technical rescue: swift water, high-rise, trench.
Rest in Peace my friend. 🙏🏻
