Honestly, we were convinced this rock would yield nothing coz of no visible algae-like growth
But nature & @SagarikaPal9 had other plans: three cyanobacterial strains, three different genera, and a new species—Nostoc sikkimense.
Sometimes, it’s really good to be proved wrong!
🚨New Paper🚨
From a single rock to three cyanobacterial strains & a new species! 🪨
Meet Nostoc sikkimense sp. nov., from Sikkim.
Hidden biodiversity is real—and closer than we think.

The lab thanks @SagarikaPal9 for the excellent Pre-PhD seminar. The #NorthEast#cyanobacteria story is something that we'll be always proud of! In spite of a global pandemic the way she explored the remote areas of Northeast India is something that we'll remember with gratitude!
Wonderful presentation and superb defense @SagarikaPal9. As a mentor it was a proud moment for me to see you delivering the excellent Pre-PhD Seminar. I hope that our story of the #cyanobacteria from #NorthEast will inspire more students to explore and discover @cyanotaxonomy
We always welcome students who are motivated and have a passion for cyanobacterial explorations and discoveries. In a field of research having so many unanswered questions and so many lineages to discover, it is always great to host talented students who want to enjoy science!
#BHU attracts students & researchers from all across the globe for its excellent academic as well as #research infrastructure and expertise. Dept. of Botany had the opportunity of hosting Ms. Adelina and Ms. Gulfiia, PhD scholars from BSPU, #Russia, for a 3-week training.
Through this study we described a novel species of #cyanobacteria genus Cylindrospermum from Jammu & Kashmir, India
Trivia 🧠: This is only the second novel species of Cylindrospermum being described from J&K. The first novel species was reported 92 years ago in 1931
Can't wait to get to work on these samples. Thank you @DrMaheshChavdar for supporting our lab with #algae from these stunning habitats. We @cyanotaxonomy feel blessed 2 get #algal samples from generous collabs like you and many others, all spread across India❤️ #phycologyfriday
📢 PUBLICATION ALERT
Through this study we described a novel species of #Cyanobacteria from #JammuAndKashmir
The species has been named Amazonocrinis malviyae in honour of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya who established #BHU@bhupro
#BHUResearchFlash
A team of researchers from Dept. of Botany, #BHU, has discovered a new species of Cyanobacteria from #Jammu & #Kashmir. The new species has been named Amazonocrinis malviyae as a tribute to the struggles and contributions of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya.
This is the first new genus of cyanobacteria discovered from J&K region using polyphasic approach
The work was funded by the @IndiaDST, Govt. of India (@serbonline), through the Core Research Grant Project
