What I still struggle to fully wrap my head around is the reality of Zimbabwe’s livestock markets. In many ways, the system is a jungle a true survival-of-the-fittest environment where the rules are unwritten and the weakest are quickly pushed out.
I once worked closely with pig producers helping to link them to reliable direct markets. Initially it looked like a breakthrough. But what followed is something I will never forget. The experience was emotionally draining but it also taught me hard, unforgettable lessons.First supplying local markets on credit is a serious mistake never ever do it. Most do not pay, and when they don’t there is little to no recourse. Contracts are rarely respected, and enforcement is almost nonexistent.Second, the industry is heavily influenced by a dominant player who effectively controls prices. This player can flood the market to crash pork prices or deliberately withhold supply to stabilize them. Smallholder farmers have no protection against these tactics and are left at the mercy of forces far beyond their control.
This is why many smallholder pork producers never grow. They are constantly entering and exiting the business, not because they lack skill or effort but because the system itself is stacked against them. Can we agree that we don't have a production challenge but a market challenge
It’s inspiring to see how “Made in Zimbabwe” is moving forward. 🇿🇼
Today, I witnessed firsthand the impressive strides in local manufacturing driven by 🇨🇳Chinese investment. Refrigerators, gas stoves, solar water heaters, and various small electronic appliances are being produced right here—with over 40% local content. These products are replacing imports, meeting everyday household needs, creating skilled jobs, and actively contributing to Zimbabwe’s industrialization, self-reliance, and economic resilience. 🎉👏
❇️ The passenger trains between Harare and Mutare as well as Bulawayo and Victoria Falls start operating today. They will be plying these routes twice a week.
