For those of us who watch @JesseBWatters PRIMETIME we see that our young adults do not have a clue about America history. At first I thought it was funny, but now it is clear that most could not pass a citizenship exam. It is appalling that these high school graduates, most who are attending college, do not know who we fought in the American revolution or even in the civil war. In fact, just a few can answer any questions. What are they learning in school? More concerning is how do they vote without even a basic understanding of how our Republic functions and how Capitalism vs. other forms of government operates. If we do not ensure that all our children meet a basic level of knowledge regarding our national history and culture, before graduation, then ignorance will result in the downfall of our society. Before we dismantle the DOE we must codify by law that graduation in high school is dependent on a national citizenship test. I had to pass a test in government in the State of Florida in 1967 in order to graduate. My family immigrated legally when I was seven years old and I love our Country and believe we must become more diligent in protecting our Democratic Republic. It is by far the greatest Country in the world with a Constitution that was crafted to ensure freedom of its citizens. Let us not throw it away because of ambivalence.

HYPOTHETICALLY… IF I BOUGHT MY HOUSE FOR $125,000 IN 2002 AND THE COUNTY NOW SAYS IT’S WORTH $487,000, WHERE DID I ACTUALLY MAKE $362,000?

Did I sell it? No.

Did I receive $362,000? No.

Did somebody hand me a check for the new assessed value? Obviously not.

But my property taxes still go up because, on paper, my house is suddenly worth hundreds of thousands more.

That’s the part that doesn’t make sense to me.

This isn’t income.

It isn’t cash sitting in my bank account.

It’s a number someone assigned to my property, and now I’m being billed based on that number.

If my stock portfolio doubles but I don’t sell, I haven’t turned that gain into cash.

If my salary stays the same, I don’t suddenly owe more income tax because someone thinks I’m worth more.

So why does owning a home work differently?

WHY AM I PAYING TAX ON A GAIN I NEVER REALIZED?

A house isn’t just an investment.

It’s where people live.

You can pay off the mortgage, own the property outright, and still face a bigger bill every year because the value of the house went up on paper.

At some point, you have to ask what “owning” something actually means if the cost of keeping it can keep rising because of money you never received.

THIS ISN’T ABOUT WHETHER THE HOUSE IS “WORTH” MORE.

IT’S ABOUT BEING CHARGED FOR VALUE YOU NEVER TURNED INTO CASH.

And people are starting to notice.

When you consider that the New York Times ownership had ties to slavery, was a propaganda operation for Stalin when he was starving Ukrainians by the millions in 1932, downplayed and even covered up the Holocaust, helped usher in Fidel Casto in Cuba, and has been a propaganda operation for Hamas and against Israel, how can that media corporation be considered anything but a total abomination?  I don't want to hear about what a fabulous paper it has been in other matters. The list of genocidal maniacs it either supported or covered for outweighs anything else and all the rest.  It's coverage of the Hamas slaughter, rape, torture of Israelis since October 7, 2023, has been shameful and appalling.

@EWernerReschke The question should be…why are there over 700,000 Oregonians needing food assistance when the state’s population is 4.3 million with a poverty rate of 11.8 percent. That’s the real tragedy. What a government we have. And it will get worse if there isn’t a change in leadership.
