Truly the best thing I’ve done for myself is transition into tech. I actually can’t believe the favour I’ve received. My LinkedIn is on fire and I’m not even done. Grateful for the destiny helpers that pushed me to face my fear and start this journey.
Culture plays a big role in how we show up in the workplace. I used to play small at work because I was raised to in a culture where playing small is seen as being humble.
But I learned very quickly that being “see face”,” or even “too known” is what gets you paid in corporate.
But don’t be over consumed by culture. Learning to balance and adapt culture will be your superpower.
Filtering your cultural upbringing with the culture you find yourself in so it works to your advantage.
In a work meeting this morning and I am the only black person and the only woman. That’s the reality of being a black woman in tech… especially here in Canada. You’re a double minority, the odds are literally against you. But you can do it.
I got into cybersecurity 2 years ago with no prior background in Tech.
I only found out about opportunities in Tech a few months before I got in. Don’t let anyone discourage you, it’s possible.
Since I am studying for the Security Blue Team level 1 certification I think I’m gonna get back on TryHackMe hard. Most of the domains overlap with the SOC Level 1 path and that will just reinforce everything I’m learning.
My top recommendation for a non technical tech role is Solutions Architect. It pays upwards of $130,000, it’s a client facing role and super in demand.
I recommend Microsoft or AWS over Google for this role right now. But surely in the future Google too
Train and get certified for free by becoming a candidate. Fees are waived until September 2023, how ever if you pass the exam you are required to a $50 fee to maintain standing.
