The Judiciary has today welcomed 166 newly enrolled advocates during a formal ceremony held at the Court of Appeal Conference Hall in Kampala.
The ceremony was presided over by HW Nalukwago Harriet Ssali, Registrar Special Duties, who represented the Acting Chief Registrar. In her remarks, HW Nalukwago congratulated the new advocates on their achievement and officially welcomed them into what she described as an honourable yet demanding profession.
She cautioned the entrants about the declining professional standards among some young lawyers, attributing the trend to limited mentorship and insufficient grounding in ethical practice. She reminded the newly enrolled advocates that their foremost duty is to serve justice, beyond representing clients, in line with Article 126 of the Constitution of Uganda.
HW Nalukwago urged them to uphold discipline, humility, and professionalism, emphasizing the core values expected of every advocate: honesty, integrity, diligence, competence, compassion, proper courtroom decorum, conflict-free representation, and a commitment to pro bono service.
Representing the Uganda Law Society, Deputy President Mr. Anthony Asiimwe encouraged the new advocates to uphold the highest ethical standards, including confidentiality and integrity, while remaining responsive to emerging technological and legal developments. He underscored the importance of legal aid, mentorship, and continuous professional development, assuring them of the Society’s support throughout their careers.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Secretary of the Law Council, Ms. Peace Athocon described the enrollment as a defining moment in the career of every lawyer. She urged the new advocates to be diligent, maintain proper courtroom decorum, and uphold a strong work ethic.
The event was moderated by HW Fidelis Otwao, Personal Assistant to the Acting Chief Registrar, and was witnessed by families and friends of the newly enrolled advocates
