Hon’ble Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Nireka Amarasuriya, Visits #IITDelhi
• IIT Delhi Proposes Creation of #SriLanka Academic and Research Hub
The Hon’ble Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Nireka Amarasuriya, visited IIT Delhi on October 17, 2025. The visit focused on strengthening bilateral collaboration in research, innovation, and higher education.
The Prime Minister interacted with Prof. Arvind Nema, Deputy Director (Operations), IIT Delhi; Prof. Anil Verma, Dean of International Programmes; Shri Atul Vyas, Registrar; Dr Nikhil Agarwal, MD, FITT; faculty members; international students; and startups.
FITT-IIT Delhi incubated startup CYRAN AI briefed the PM about the BUDDHI AI DIY kit they developed, whereas Cluix briefed her about their technology on the portable water quality analyzer. With the help of BUDDHI, a STEM education kit, one can learn AI, experience AI and build AI. The PM also witnessed various other technologies being developed at IIT Delhi during her visit to the Institute’s Research and Innovation Park.
The Hon’ble Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Nireka Amarasuriya, said, "IIT Delhi is a prestigious engineering and research institute in our neighbourhood. I believe there is significant potential for academic and research collaboration between our institutes and IIT Delhi. We are already collaborating with IIT Madras, and we look forward to exploring the ways in which our institutions can collaborate with IIT Delhi as well.”
Prof. Arvind Nema, Deputy Director (Operations), IIT Delhi, said that the Institute was honoured to host the PM of Sri Lanka, Dr. Amarasuriya, and her delegation and is looking forward to strengthening the academic and research collaboration with the Sri Lankan institutions.
“The Institute already has a few students from Sri Lanka. We would like to further strengthen the collaborative efforts for capacity building. Sri Lankan students are welcome to pursue Master's and PhD degrees at IIT Delhi and https://t.co/vbmYS2ontS. at our international campus in Abu Dhabi. A few dedicated scholarships funded by the Sri Lankan governmentfor their students aspiring to pursue Master's and PhD degrees at IIT Delhi would be a catalyst in furthering the capacity building,” said Prof. Arvind Nema, Deputy Director (Operations).
During the meeting, Prof. Anil Verma, Dean of International Programmes, presented an overview of the IIT Delhi’s international initiatives to the Sri Lankan Prime Minister. He proposed the possibility of forming a "Sri Lanka Academic and Research Hub at IIT Delhi". The proposed hub may strengthen academic & research cooperation and capacity building by connecting higher education institutions in India and Sri Lanka.
Prof. Verma also briefed the Prime Minister about the Institute's state-of-the-art academic and research infrastructure, the cutting-edge research conducted by IIT Delhi, and its remarkable achievements in national and international rankings.
*Geospatial Intelligence Capsule*
As combat operations get technologically advanced and data driven, understanding and integration of geospatial intelligence into Military Operations is essential. To give first hand insights to our #FutureLeaders, a capsule on Geospatial Intelligence was conducted at #DSSC Wellington, highlighting its growing importance in #FutureWarfare.
The capsule featured enlightening sessions by experts from Defence Image Processing and Analysis Centre #DIPAC, Col Rakesh Verma (Retd) representing @Maxar and Prof Manan Suri from IIT-Delhi. The speakers provided deep insights into the intricacies of Geospatial Intelligence, covering a wide spectrum including global perspectives, future trends, the role of #OSINT, capabilities of Services and the current status of the Indian Defence Industry. Deliberations delved into the integration of #AI in geospatial analytics and included case studies from recent global conflicts to reinforce real-time applicability.
The capsule served as a vital platform for enhancing domain understanding among #FutureLeaders and underscored the need for continuous adaptation to emerging technologies in the geospatial domain.

🚀 Day 02 Highlights from #ISC2025
🍽️ Food for Thought from the session “EO and Digital Twins for Critical Infrastructure: Energy, Utilities and Smart Cities”
“The convergence of EO, AI, and infrastructure is more than just a tech trend—it’s a shift in how we govern. From heat maps to traffic to transparency, digital twins can transform urban management."
-Captain Vishal Kanwar (Retd), MD, @PwC_IN (Moderator)
“India’s top smart cities face five key issues—traffic, floods, green loss, encroachment, and weak finances. EO helps us solve them. Surat collects 90% property tax, more than double the national average, because it uses EO data smartly. When funds are tight, EO helps governments act right the first time”.
-Mr. Shailesh Gaur, Expert, Digital Transformation.
“We work with city bodies to embed EO in urban design—from heat island mapping to informal settlements. But the real challenge is fragmented data access. We need standards, training, and awareness to bring geospatial thinking into planning practice."
-Dr. Dr. Shivangi S. Somvanshi @DrShivangiSSom1 , Centre Head, Center for Applied Geomatics (CAG), CRDF, @CEPTUniversity1
“Digital twins help cities respond faster by shrinking the OODA loop—observe, orient, decide, act. But to make them work, we need better design, ethical data use, and skilled professionals across the system.”
-Dr. Manan Suri @manansuri2002 , Founder, Cyran AI Solutions
“We should use tech to make governance transparent—contract fraud or inefficiencies can be flagged by the system itself. While we’re investing heavily in launching satellites, more focus is needed on downstream infrastructure to turn EO into real-time, people-first solutions."
- Mr. Deepak Tawri, CEO, Geminus Space.
“The private sector thrives when research translates to solutions. Lepton’s geospatial models power most of India’s telecom fibre networks. Now we’re building 3D digital twins with sub-metre accuracy to automate operations and boost urban efficiency."
Mr. Nikhil S., Head of Engineering, @leptonsoftware
