The final Fellows' Session of #WRC2026!
Silas Yeboah presented findings showing that Plasmodium falciparum parasites in Ghana remain largely susceptible to key antimalarial partner drugs while identifying emerging lumefantrine tolerance, providing valuable evidence to strengthen malaria drug resistance surveillance.
Luckman Gbati shared promising research demonstrating that probiotic-derived extracellular vesicles can reduce tumour development, suppress inflammation, and restore gut microbiota balance in a colorectal cancer model, highlighting their potential for microbiome-based cancer prevention.

The Fellows' Session concludes Day 2 of #WRC2026 with two presentations advancing our understanding of malaria vectors and insecticide resistance.
Dipina Hyancinthe Ki shares new genomic evidence linking aldehyde oxidases to insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae s.l., while Cyril Kuma presents findings showing that although humans remain the primary blood meal source, malaria vectors also feed on other vertebrates and carry high levels of Plasmodium falciparum DNA and key antimalarial resistance markers.
Another engaging day of scientific exchange comes to a close as we look forward to the final day of #WRC2026.

Kicking off the Geo-enabled Detect and Respond System (GDRS) for anti-malarial resistance in Ghana Stakeholder Engagement with insightful presentations that set the tone for collaboration.

The session opened with a welcome from Prof Lucas Amenga-Etego, who also shared an overview of @WACCBIP_UG and its impact in advancing research.

Christina Riley followed with highlights on Akros and the Reveal platform, demonstrating the power of data-driven tools in disease control.

From the national front, Wahjib Mohammed of the @nmepgh outlined Ghana’s malaria control efforts and strategic priorities.

We also heard from Dr Ezenwa James Onyemata of the @IHVNigeria, and Dr Natalie V. S. Vinkeles Melchers from Wageningen University & Research, who shared insights into their work and research focus.

Viral Sequencing and Bioinformatics Workshop Day 4!
For today’s activity, participants are focusing on the bioinformatics aspect of their sequencing work, exploring how raw data is transformed into meaningful insights. They are working through quality control, building consensus sequences, and performing sequence alignment and phylogenetic analyses, with emphasis on interpreting the trees to draw informed conclusions.

The Viral Sequencing and Bioinformatics Workshop is in progress, with participants executing end-to-end sequencing workflows from adapter ligation and sample clean-up to library preparation, flow cell checks, priming, loading, and sequencing, all carried out with precision and careful attention to detail.

Our last two sessions to close the day featured

Ethel Debrah who spoke on how AMR has become a global pandemic and current efforts to develop alternative therapeutics; phage therapy which is the therapeutic administration of bacteriophages to eliminate bacteria pathogens is one such approach gaining traction. With reports on the persistence of multi drug resistance critical pathogens in Ghana on the rise we must consider the benefits this approach has to offer.

Finally, @ssyamoako shared insights from his research on the population genomics and insecticide resistance of Anopheles coluzzii across different ecological zones in West Africa including; Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire. He identifies two main genetic clusters presenting widespread insecticide resistance mutations, and emphasises the need for region-specific control strategies, given how ecological and genetic factors jointly shape resistance evolution.

Without reliable local funding, we're too dependent on external donors — and when their priorities shift, our progress stalls. If we want to keep our brightest minds here, we have to create an environment where they can actually thrive. - @gordon_awandare
