Hydrogels rank among materials with enormous potential – from medicine to agriculture. But detailed research has long been hampered by a fundamental problem: in preparing samples for electron microscopy, their delicate structure was easily damaged.

Scientists at the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the CAS in Brno, in collab with the Faculty of Chemistry at Brno University of Technology, have now developed a method that preserves the natural appearance of hydrogels – as well as the bacteria within them – opening the way to their targeted use in practice.
