With all the recent interactions between the community and Riot on X/Twitter, I wanted to share my thoughts on the current game balance in League. Many players agree that the game is currently unfun, unrewarding, and extremely stale. Here's my thoughts on it:
Key Problems with the Game:
1. The meta is boring, stale, and lacks variety
2. Only a handful of champions are viable
3. Defensive items far outshine offensive items
4. ADC is the worst role in the game.
1. No variety, stale meta
Right now, the meta forces you into playing one style or you're at a major disadvantage. There's no more creativity or build diversity.
Example 1: Sion (Season 11-13):
You could go full AD or lethality and still impact games.
Now: You’re locked into full tank every game.
Example 2: Draven: (Season 11-13)
Before, you had MANY viable choices for runes and items: Hail of Blades, Lethal Tempo, Press the Attack. First items like Collector, Ghostblade, Bloodthirster, Shieldbow, Kraken, Essence Reaver, Prowler’s, Duskblade all had unique use cases.
Now (Season 15): You're stuck with one build: Bloodthirster → Collector/LDR → Infinity Edge. If you try anything else, you’re HEAVILY punished and at a major disadvantage.
The fun and creative side of League is gone. Everyone’s forced to play the same way every game. That is simply just bad gameplay design.
2. The meta only allows a few champions to be viable
Try playing Twitch, Kalista, or Vayne botlane right now, these champions are borderline unplayable. I understand that there will always be metas in video games, some characters will naturally just be stronger than others, but in past seasons, you could still find success with off-meta picks even at the highest levels, which is no longer possible.
Example 1: Kalista Season 12-13: Low winrate champion, but players like KT still reached high ranks (Rank 10 EUW) playing Kalista only.
Example 2: Pipey’s Draven to (Rank 7 EUW).
This is no longer possible. These champions don’t have the damage, or value to be able to pull this off anymore because of how the meta is. (These are only examples because of my OWN experience, there's WAY more champions that suffer from this)
Snowballing is also weaker than ever, and defensive items shut down early aggression, which results in most games playing out itself, and it makes it A LOT harder to carry through individual skill. (if you're not meta abusing)
3. Defensive items are too strong
Let’s talk about itemization and compare
Currently:
LDR passive removed
BORK heavily nerfed
No meaningful ways to deal with tanks anymore
Compare that to Season 12:
Eclipse/Prowlers giving consistent lethality/armor pen after every legendary item
LDR actually worked as a tank counter because it had passive
Infinity edge had high AD OR High crit chance damage, now it has none.
Now? Armor and HP, give way more value than damage items, and there's not really any item that doesn't feel underwhelming to counter it.
4. ADC is the most unrewarding role
ADC feels like a support role now. You rely completely on your jungler and support for everything. You can’t make plays yourself like you used to.
The role has lost its identity completely.
No more outplays, expression or creativity, just wave clear and hope you counterpicked and let the game play out itself. Before, you used to be able to climb through skill and champion mastery, even on non meta picks, now, you're forced into playing meta to win (at least for apex tiers)
Now, where did it all go wrong?
Season 12: Great
Post-durability patch: Great
Season 13: One of the best in years (imo)
Season 14 Split 1 & 2: Still good
Patch 14.19: This was the breaking point.
Every legendary item was nerfed by 5–12%. This change amplified every issue mentioned above. This patch completely ruined the whole game and is the reason to why everything feels so lacklustre.
Solution?
BUFF Items.
Either revert Patch 14.19 entirely or buff legendary items to bring back diversity, agency, and FUN.
Default strength should be higher in the game. (just how it was in older seasons, more champion and build variety, creativity and fun)
There should be MORE damage in the game, not less.
If items got buffed/changed, the meta would change and wouldn't be so boring anymore, there would be more variety. More champions would be viable simply because the default strength of the game would be slightly higher, which would allow more creativity, more plays and more impact even on worse roles. Defensive items would not be so overpowered anymore if we actually introduced proper counter options. Overall the game would feel more rewarding and fun again.
It is very disappointing to see a game that I've played for +13 years, that was once so fun, fall into this state. Instead of constantly limiting and nerfing everything, Riot should focus on letting players express themselves, just like how it was before. Let me know your thoughts.

I was curious to see how many OTP's there were for each role in Challenger for both Korea and EUW, so I checked every single player manually on both ladders. Some of these players on this list are not fully OTP, but majority of them play 1 champion for most of their games.
Out of 600 players, counting OTP's per role:
TOP 25
JUNGLE 28
MID 31
ADC 3
SUPPORT 18
(ADC has 8 in the notepad but 5 of those were Cassio/Aurelion sol players that I wouldn't count cause they are not marksmen)
Sometimes I came across profiles that had stuff like Karthus or Vayne (champs that are viable in bot lane), but they always ended up being played in another role instead like jungle and top.
I am not saying you can't climb to Challenger while playing ADC, but there's clearly a pattern. The role just isn't enjoyable anymore and offers way less agency compared to other roles. ADC has gone from a role with a lot of creativity and outplay potential and has been reduced to something much more restrictive and dull.
Just wanted to share this :D
BUFF ADC
