Police Investigate Arson Near Marple War Memorial in Stockport
Officers from West Midlands Police are investigating after a fire was deliberately started near a war memorial in Stockport. The incident occurred at approximately 21:50 on Wednesday 5 November when police were called to reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph in Marple.
The fire was started within a bin, and wooden pallets had also been set alight, resulting in damage to the surrounding ground. Marple neighbourhood officers are actively investigating the incident and are appealing to the public for information.
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton, of the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team, commented on the incident:
“This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. We are working closely with partners at Stockport Council and the fire service to ensure the area is cleaned and restored.
"We want to identify the individuals responsible, and we will have extra, high-visibility patrols in the park each evening leading up to the Remembrance Day service on Sunday 9 November. The Cenotaph means a lot to the community and incidents like this are deeply upsetting, particularly at a time when we should be honouring the memory of our war veterans.”
West Midlands Police is asking anyone with information to contact them on 0161 856 9782 quoting log number 4223-051125 or report online. Information can also be provided by calling 101 or via the reporting tools on the police website, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.

⚓📰 #USNAVY UPDATE: Washington Nationals Host U.S. Navy for Navy Day, Celebrates 250th Birthday
The Washington Nationals honored U.S. Navy Sailors from across the National Capital Region during Navy Day at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., Aug. 21, 2025.
This year’s Navy Day carried special significance as it coincided with the Navy’s 250th birthday, which will be officially marked Oct. 13. The milestone offered an opportunity not only to honor the men and women who serve, but also to highlight the Navy’s historic legacy and enduring role in national defense.
“Being able to celebrate the Navy’s 250th birthday in the nation’s capital while enjoying the national pastime of baseball was something special,” said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Dauntae Forrest, assigned to Naval District Washington. “There’s nothing better than being honored by the community at Nationals Park.”

@MerseyFire My neighbours house caught fire last year she died. You sent six fire engines to her house. You sent nine to this huge fire, not enough fire engines. Looks like you wanted it to burn it self out.

How’s this for a first shift?
PC Stephen Williams was just a probationer when he started patrolling Rhyl promenade in 1984. Within hours, he’d secured a fatal collision scene, helped deliver a baby in a living room, and then returned to the station to take statements and deliver a death message to a grieving family.
That was day one!
Forty years later, Steve has finished his last shift, having gone on to serve both as a frontline officer and, more recently, as a police staff member.
His career has spanned decades of change, challenge, and commitment. From sudden tragedy to life’s most precious moments, Steve has seen it all and handled it with professionalism and compassion.
A career like that isn’t just about clocking years. It’s about impact. Resilience. Service.
Wishing you all the best in retirement, Steve and thank you for everything you’ve given to policing over the last four decades. What a legacy. 💙

On Sunday, the FDNY Phoenix Society marched in the 35th annual Philippine Independence Day Parade Celebration. The parade is the largest of its kind outside of the Philippines!
