🚨Steven Gerrard on Ibou Konate joining Real Madrid for Free.
🗣️“It’s very painful and heartbreaking when players like this leave a club for free, and there’s nothing like replacing a super star defender because there will never be one available in the transfer market.
I wonder why do the club always let players like Luis Diaz which was about the club claiming he’s getting old and now Ibou Konate too is leaving for free because they couldn’t reach on personal terms with the player and acting like it’s normal which isn’t normal.
Madrid just got a player every club dream of having at their center back for free, a super star, a hard working defender that gives his all for the badge and yet still Liverpool doesn’t deserve to have him because he’s demanding more.”
John Roberts (LFC Groundsman) tidies away over 4000 cans & bottles after the Liverpool/Celtic European Cup winners cup semi at Anfield in the April of 1966. Bill Shankly then asked Jock Stein if he wanted share of gate receipts or... the empties back! 🍺#YNWA#LFC😂
The wild Liverpool theories have already begun 😅:
2004:
▪️ Arsenal win the league
▪️ Liverpool sacked their manager
▪️ Liverpool hired a Spaniard
▪️ Liverpool win the UCL 🏆✅
2026:
▪️ Arsenal win the league
▪️ Liverpool sacked their manager
▪️ Liverpool set to hire a Spaniard

Liverpool’s centre-back planning looks questionable in hindsight. In January, the club reportedly chose not to meet a £20m valuation for Marc Guehi, opting against strengthening at that point. Fast forward a few months, and they’ve since seen Ibrahima Konate leave in the summer, creating an even bigger gap in the defensive unit.
Now, instead of addressing the situation early and at a relatively modest cost, they’re likely to be forced into the market again for a replacement this time in the £60–70m range for a top-level centre-back.
When you step back and look at the overall picture, it raises a simple question of squad planning. For roughly the same total investment, Liverpool could have secured both Guehi and retained Konate, ensuring depth, continuity, and stability in a key area of the pitch heading into next season.
Instead, the decision-making sequence has potentially turned a manageable, cost-effective reinforcement into a far more expensive rebuild. That’s where the criticism of long-term planning starts to make sense.
