Germany always marches into disaster with a consensus so overwhelming it borders on madness. The defining irony of the Merkel era lies in the chasm between the nation's self-image as a hyper-rational, engineer-driven superpower and the irrational stupidity of its collective choices.

For sixteen years, Angela Merkel’s trust ratings defied political gravity, hovering between 70% and 85%. Even as the foundations of national security were dismantled, support surged during crises—reaching over 80% during the pandemic. This data indicts the collective psyche far more than the leader herself. It reveals a nation that didn't just tolerate its own decline, but actively demanded it, exposing a fatal flaw in the German mentality: the confusion of conformity with rationality.

The German mind loves a Gesamtkunstwerk—a total, unifying ideological project. In the Merkel years, this manifested as a desire to be the "Moral Superpower." The exit from nuclear energy wasn't treated as a technical trade-off, but as a path to spiritual purity. The electorate cheered the shutdown of efficient reactors not because the math worked, but because it felt virtuous. The Germans optimized the logistics of their own energy suicide with a level of competence that masked the insanity of the objective itself.

The unwavering support for Merkel also exposes a cultural addiction to false stability (Scheinstabilität). Post-war German political culture is paralyzed by a fear of conflict and disruption. Merkel’s genius was her ability to act as a sedative, depoliticizing existential choices so the public could remain in a Biedermeier-like slumber. The Germans equate the absence of debate with the presence of competence. By supporting a leader who avoided hard choices (on defense, on infrastructure, on Russia), the electorate was essentially voting for a suspension of history. They valued the comfort of the status quo over the friction of necessary reform, proving that in modern Germany, the only thing more powerful than the desire for efficiency is the desire to not be disturbed.

The Germans possess a terrifying competence in execution—building the pipelines, dismantling the reactors, enforcing the regulations—but apply this technical brilliance to objectives that are fundamentally hallucinatory.

Nataša Pirc Musar has come under suspicion over alleged ties to Russian intelligence, while the ruling party is already demanding that the president be denied access to classified intelligence briefings.

It all started with an ordinary car accident. It turned out that Pirc Musar was traveling with a Russian friend who is linked to a former deputy head of Slovenian intelligence who fled to Russia back in the 1990s.

Parliament’s security commission called an emergency meeting and demanded that the intelligence services provide a report on possible Russian influence within the president’s inner circle.

Attention has also turned to Pirc Musar’s own trips to Russia. Despite publicly criticizing Russia’s invasion, she regularly visited Moscow and St. Petersburg — including shortly before the start of the full-scale war.

Sicily has a four-legged early warning system for Mount Etna. It has a beard, it eats gorse, and it is beating several million euros of monitoring equipment by half a day.

The shepherds have known this for as long as anyone has kept goats on that mountain. The herd tells you. No drama about it, no bleating, no rearing up and pointing at the summit. They simply decline to go up the hill that morning, and if the goats will not go up, neither do you. Oldest volcano warning system in Europe. Costs nothing. Runs on scrub.

For most of history the scientific response to this has been a polite nod and a change of subject.

Then in 2011 a German turned up with a box of trackers.

Martin Wikelski of the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour has an unfashionable habit of asking local people what they already know before deciding they are simple. He collared goats living year-round on the slopes and started logging where they went, and when, and how fast.

On 4 January 2012 the data went peculiar. The animals turned down the high pastures they use every day of their lives, all of them, and headed for the trees. The seismometers were quiet. The gas monitors were quiet. In a control room in Catania, a great deal of very expensive equipment was reporting a perfectly ordinary Wednesday.

That evening Etna started throwing lava and ash into the sky.

Six hours.

The same signature has now turned up before eight major eruptions, and at the extreme the goats move fourteen hours ahead of the mountain. Ahead of the tremor. Ahead of the gas. Ahead of everything the volcanologists are paid to watch.

Nobody knows how they do it. The best guess is sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide venting beforehand at concentrations no human nose could ever find, which would mean the animals are smelling the future and declining to comment. Wikelski's own summary is that they know in advance, we have no idea how, but they do.

The institute says there is not yet enough data for a formal warning system. More eruptions, more animals, more species. Which is the correct scientific answer and a very funny one, since the shepherds reached sufficient confidence somewhere around the Bronze Age and have been acting on it every day since.

Rome had geese who saved the city by making a racket when the Gauls came over the wall, and honoured them for it every year afterwards.

Etna has their spiritual successors, doing the same job by refusing to walk uphill.

We have a word in English for a man who behaves like a goat. It means he eats anything, wrecks anything, and understands nothing.

In 1954, scientists told Congress the Arctic would melt within 25 to 50 years.

Then 20 years later, in 1974, Time magazine warned we were heading for another ice age.

By the 1990s, when that didn't happen, warming was the returning scare, with Norway's top expert saying the Arctic would be ice-free by 2007. The Centre for Biological Diversity said it would be ice-free by 2012. The BBC said by 2013. Needless to say, they were all wrong. The Arctic sea ice minimum has actually been stable for the past 18 years now.

In 2008, NASA's James Hansen predicted lower Manhattan would be underwater by 2018 due to the burning of fossil fuels.

Back in 1923, scientists claimed Glacier National Park would melt by 1950. Then in 2006, Al Gore said it would be gone by 2020. Yet today, the glaciers are still there, about the same size they were 35 years ago.

Decade after decade, the doomsday dates change. But the climate alarmist script persists.

Früher, als die Kernkraftwerke noch liefen, versuchte man sie zu diskreditieren, indem man sie als GELDDRUCKMASCHINEN bezeichnete. Betrieben von raffgierigen Energieriesen, die mit günstig produziertem Strom Milliarden scheffeln. Sogar eine Kernbrennstoffsteuer wurde eingeführt (die natürlich verfassungswidrig war), um vom großen Kuchen etwas abzubekommen.

Heute, da die Kernkraftwerke außer Betrieb sind, versucht man den Wiedereinstieg zu verhindern, indem man behauptet, Kernenergie sei zu teuer.

Die @fdp fordert einen Stopp des weiteren Rückbaus deutscher Kernkraftwerke und will Kernenergie in Deutschland wieder ermöglichen.

Das Präsidium der FDP hat dazu einen klaren Beschluss gefasst: Das Atomgesetz soll geändert, bestehende Kernkraftwerksinfrastruktur erhalten und neue Reaktortechnologien geprüft werden. Kernenergie soll wieder gleichberechtigt am Wettbewerb teilnehmen und gesicherte, saubere Leistung liefern.
