China and the Philippines have been at odds again recently over the sovereignty of the Batan Islands.

As I've said before, China's expansion toward the sea is inevitable. For the past three thousand years, Chinese civilization was agrarian in nature and always viewed the ocean as having little value. That's why, throughout its history, Chinese civilization gradually expanded into Xinjiang, Tibet, and Mongolia on land, but never made any expansion in the maritime direction.

But now that Chinese civilization has evolved into an industrial one, the ocean has clearly become critically important. China cannot and will not tolerate the First Island Chain — which is naturally China's maritime Great Wall — remaining under the control of hostile forces.

Going forward, from Japan, Ryukyu, Taiwan, to the Philippines, the First Island Chain can only accommodate three types of actors: regimes friendly to China, Chinese military bases, and Chinese territory. Any force on the First Island Chain that does not fall into one of these three categories is an enemy of China and will be a legitimate target for Chinese missiles, warships, fighters, bombers and drones. You make your choices.
