HR: When can you start work?

Wrong answer:
❌ "Tomorrow we can."
❌ "Whenever possible."

You should avoid answers that are too general.

Okay, let's say your notice period is 1 month.
And realistically, you can start in 4–6 weeks.
You still can't say "1 month".

Here's why:
• Maybe the company is actually flexible.
• You can wait 6 weeks.
• Maybe they can negotiate a more suitable start date.
• Or maybe you need to take some time to calm down before starting a new job.

So you have to answer wisely. Follow these 3 examples:

1. Ask the company's expectations first
"For this position, when is the new hire expected to start working ?"

– Usually HR will tell you the real urgency.

2. If you want to maintain leverage
"Currently my notice period is 1 month, but I am open to discuss according to the company's needs."

3. If HR insists on a specific date
"Realistically, I can start in 4–6 weeks, depending on the exit and handover process."

In this way:
– You look professional
– Didn't overpromise
– There is still room to negotiate
