No cause, grievance, ideology, or political agenda can justify the murder of innocent civilians. Such acts must be condemned without exception or qualification, regardless of who the victims are—regardless of their region, ethnicity, background, or beliefs.
The first responsibility of any state is to protect the lives, safety, and security of its citizens.
Tolerance for the killing of innocent civilians has unfortunately eroded to alarming levels. Too often, outrage is selective, shaped by politics, identity, or geography rather than principle.
Our humanity is measured by the value we place on innocent lives.
Ethiopian state media has entered Nollywood territory. They’re telling us, patients were ripping out IV fluids to run to the ballot box. At this rate, next they’ll report a man woke up from a 7-year coma just to vote for Prosperity. 😂
The funniest part about propaganda like this is that it always overacts. Real public support never needs this level of theatrical storytelling.
Isn’t this essentially a polite way of renaming a toll charge? Or perhaps a diplomatic off-ramp that allows Trump to claim victory by arguing Iran agreed to drop the idea of charging transit fees in Hormuz.

Isaias's 2026 speech in contrast to his 2025 one:
In contrast to his 2025 Independence Speech, Isaias did not mention China as he did in 2025, where he stated, "China stands today as pre-eminent in the world in terms of industrial output. Even with technological dominance, the US status is suffering multifaceted corrosion, and future trends do not predict its return to pre-eminence. The US is not the most powerful country militarily – a fact corroborated by several metrics in addition to NATO’s precarious condition.” This time, he did not mention Russia by name, either.
He did not undermine Ethiopia as he did in 2025, where he said, “The spiral of crises and devastation inculcated for eighty years – no less than three generations – by the misguided policies enunciated by Washington’s Fosters (Foster Dulles and his ilk) is well-known and fully documented to warrant reiteration here.” He added then, “Ideology of Orommuma” that does not represent the Oromo people, the conundrum of a “Cushitic-Semitic antagonism”, “Instrumentalising the people and land of Afar as a ruse and convenient platform”, “stoking ethnic wars all over”, etc.
In his 2026 independence speech of 23 minutes, 16 mins. were dedicated to the world order, two were for the Horn, and about five minutes were about Eritrea, promising that services will be improved, as if he had just taken the presidency.
He was soft on the US, though mentioning Trump by name seven times. He rather framed his narrative by the following questions:
Why and on what legal basis did the White House take unilateral action of “arresting’’ Maduro?
Within the historical trajectory of the United States, particularly during the Cold War and the subsequent, reckless phase of the “unipolar world order", is both timely and of paramount importance.
Why is Iran alone prohibited? Does Iran genuinely constitute a threat to the U.S.? What legal privilege has the United States have to take unilateral military action?
Concerning sphere of influence, various trial balloons released in the past year include Greenland, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, etc
The galloping aggregate US debt, which I referenced last year as exceeding 30 trillion dollars, now appears to have reached 40 trillion. This is by no means an insignificant factor.

The Issa militia has once again carried out a brutal attack against innocent civilians in the Afar Regional State. Addo Humed and Fatuma Humed, a six-year-old girl, were mercilessly killed while herding their goats on 16 May 2026 at approximately 17:00 local time in Gurmudale, near Gawane.
This latest atrocity, which claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter, forms part of a disturbing pattern of recurring violence directed against vulnerable Afar civilians, particularly women and children in pastoral communities. Families continue to face fear, displacement, and loss as attacks occur with alarming frequency.
The continued failure of the Ethiopian authorities to effectively protect civilians or hold perpetrators accountable has deepened frustration and anger among local communities. Many residents accuse the government of turning a blind eye to repeated killings and insecurity in the region, despite mounting civilian casualties and persistent warnings from affected populations.
Immediate and impartial investigations are urgently needed, alongside concrete measures to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent further bloodshed in the Afar Regional State.
The Pretoria Agreement not only halted the devastating Tigray war, but also triggered a dramatic realignment of political actors and alliances. Who would have imagined that Getachew Reda, once among the TPLF’s fiercest critics of PM Abiy Ahmed, would later serve as his adviser and publicly defend his administration? Equally striking is witnessing some TPLF supporters in Mekelle expressing sympathy for Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, once portrayed as Tigray’s principal enemy.
A glaring example of how today’s enemies in the Horn of Africa can quickly become tomorrow’s tactical partners.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), outlawed by Ethiopia’s federal government, has announced the reinstatement of the Tigray regional government it agreed to dissolve under the Pretoria Agreement six years ago.
Reactions among Tigrayans remain divided, but the message is unmistakable: this is a decisive break with what remained of the Pretoria framework that however fragile maintained relations between Mekelle and Addis Ababa.
Pretoria is now functionally obsolete; it is dead. What exists in its place is not a strained peace, but a political vacuum—one that invites confrontation, miscalculation, and a possible return to conflict.
