Statement by the African Union Commission on Israel’s Reported Decision Regarding “Somaliland”.
The African Union Commission expresses deep concern and strongly condemns reports of Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to the so-called “Somaliland.”
The Commission reaffirms the African Union’s unwavering respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Somalia, in accordance with the Constitutive Act of the African Union and international law. The Union does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state.
Recalling the communiqué of the 1324th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council of 6 January 2026, the Commission underscores that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland is null and void and warns that such actions risk undermining regional stability.
The African Union remains committed to supporting Somalia’s peace, governance, and national cohesion.

The Algiers Agreement, signed 25 years ago today, resulted in an unappealable border ruling, keeping Ethiopia at least 60km away from Eritrea’s coast.
Press Release : Eritrea has withdrawn its Membership from IGAD
#Eritrea has formally informed the IGAD Secretary General of its decision to withdraw from the Organization.
Eritrea’s decision stems from, and is predicated, on the following poignant facts and events:
1. As it will be recalled, Eritrea played a pivotal role when IGAD was revitalized in 1993, and subsequently worked, in collaboration other Member States, for its transformation and effectiveness so that it would serve as the primary vehicle for enhancement of regional peace and stability thereby paving the ground for viable regional economic integration.
2. Unfortunately, over time and especially since 2005, IGAD has not only failed to meet the aspirations of the peoples of the region, but instead played a deleterious role becoming a tool against targeted Member States; particularly Eritrea. These unwarranted acts prompted Eritrea to suspend its membership in April 2007.
3. Eritrea re-activated its membership in IGAD in June 2023, hoping that the Organization would heed Eritrea’s call for reform and rectify its past records. Regrettably, IGAD has and continues to renege on its statutory obligations thereby undermining its own relevance and legal mandate.
In the event, Eritrea finds itself compelled to withdraw its membership from an organization that has forfeited its legal mandate and authority; offering no discernible strategic benefit to all its constituencies and failing to contribute substantively to the stability of the region.

.@WHO is working closely with #Ethiopia’s @FMoHealth, the Ethiopia Public Health Institute and regional health authorities as part of the rapid response to a suspected outbreak of a viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) in the Southern Ethiopian Region.
8 people, including health workers, have reportedly been infected.
WHO has deployed experts to the affected towns, along with medicines and other materials to support care for people in need, and personal protective equipment for health workers.
WHO will also be supporting contact tracing in affected communities. Samples have been sent for testing. Further details are expected soon.
I have released US$300,000 from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies to provide immediate support.
WHO’s offices in Ethiopia and South Sudan are collaborating closely to prevent potential cross-border transmission. WHO is ready to scale up support, as and when needed.
I commend Ethiopian health authorities for their timely sharing of information and quick response and offer WHO’s full support.
