My daughter and 8 other students have just completed their placement as part of a college healthcare foundation course. Sadly, all of them have decided that they no-longer want to work in healthcare, owing to the way they were treated by Nurses on the wards, what’s going on? 🥲

It was really interesting on @bbc5live last night to learn that many assume that physio staff are better paid than nurses. All NHS staff with exception of medics have the same pay system and rates, same working hours and other benefits @thecsp

Nursing is one of the lowest paid graduate jobs in the country. A newly qualified nurse will go in at £27k a year but with significant debt, having worked for free for three years prior to qualifying. 1/

& virtually all health professions face similar challenges, mine (occupational therapy) included. Therapists are often key to discharge planning (& therefore patient flow), so pressures can be intense. These conditions aren’t attractive to new starters! 4/

Assessing capacity for a decision is so important and should be taken really seriously. Appreciate MCAs can take time (of which no one has any) but we can’t take this responsibility lightly.

- Do they know all the options available?
- Have you asked them to repeat info back to you?
- Have you pulled the curtain and come down to their level?
- Have you offered them time to think it over?
