On March 20, 2005, near Salman Pak, Iraq, Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester, a 23 year old team leader with the Kentucky Army National Guard's 617th Military Police Company, was escorting a 30 truck supply convoy along Alternate Supply Route Detroit when over 50 insurgents ambushed them from irrigation ditches and an orchard with heavy AK-47, RPK machine-gun, and RPG fire.

The lead vehicle was destroyed and set ablaze, trapping the convoy in a kill zone. Outnumbered five to one, Hester directed devastating suppressive fire from her Humvee's MK-19 grenade launcher and M240B machine gun, then dismounted under intense enemy fire with her squad leader, Staff Sergeant Timothy Nein. They flanked the insurgents, advanced across open ground, hurled two fragmentation grenades into a trench line, and cleared two enemy positions with M4 rifles-Hester personally eliminating three insurgents in close quarters combat during the 25 minute firefight.

Their heroic counterattack broke the ambush, leaving 27 insurgents dead, six wounded, and one captured, while saving the convoy and its drivers with zero U.S. fatalities in the squad.

For her gallantry under fire, Hester became the first woman since World War Il and the first ever in US Army history to receive the Silver Star for direct ground combat valor in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
